Collecting Production knives.

I move mostly Spyderco (about 70 Spydies and one SAK). I use seven of them (including Ladybug), also I have 4-5 back-ups. The rest are for my viewing pleasure arranged above my desk.

picture need to be updated, just a little. :)
That is a very, very classy set up bh49. Where did you get those frames from if you don't mind me asking?

A mint in box knife will almost always sell faster and for more money than anything that's been, carried or sharpened, in my experience.
In most instances yes, I agree. I do not agree with comments regarding knives that have been used, abused, imperfections, no box, etc etc having no collector value. Many times I read very simplified theory's regarding people's buying habits. There are simply too many factors that determine what any one individual will take into account when purchasing cutlery, esp a model that is seldom seen.

I agree with many of the people here..i have a ton of production knives..benchmade(red class), kershaw, sog, bladetech, leatherman, ontario,kabar,smith/wesson, one fallkniven and crkt...99% bought off ebay..i must have about 90-100 knives some i am selling ...some i buy slightly used so i don;t feel wierd using them...some will never cut anything..even though there not high end ..i like them just the same..not sure if i could own a 500 dollar and beyond knife..lol

every last time on productions.

ya have a bit of leeway on customs as most 'smiths will polish out/re bead blast/etc most of there knives for a small fee(usually $25 or so) and make them look 100% again, even with all that serious collectors would prefer new stuff which hasnt been "re'done", i dont care about that though, to me if it looks 100% its 100%.

its one of the reasons i edc a custom if ya scuff it up ya can always get it re-done, and it lets ya enjoy your knife, without that i would cringe the 1st time i scuffed one of my custom emersons, and certainly would never use one fairly hard like i do my '13.

I got a question for you avid knife collectors such as I, well starting. I am in to collection brand name knives like SOG, Spyderco, Kershaw etc.... When I buy them I don't really intend to use them really at all, maybe a little when I am going casual and not at work, I have my workers knives that I use for my job, not my upper end knives. I know alot of people that collect knives, and collect them as show pieces get knives that have the wood, or bone handles,, or the o-1 steel blades etc... the mutli hundred thousand dollar knives. But just wanted to ask how many just collect production knives and show them off? That is what I am into, your Endura 4's, or your SOG Aegis, those type of knives to show off. Any comments I am sure....

How long are you in collecting knives?
Because you go trough a certain evolution.
I started buying production working knives with good reviews.
In the beginning some SOG, mostly Fällkniven and BRKT.
Next I was looking for other types of knives.
I got a Scandinavian period in which I bought Scandinavian knives.
Next a Russian and a Japanese period.
In the meantime I also started to buy some customs.
About 3/4 of my collection are fixed knives.
In my country people don't wear fixed knives so most of them don't see any use.
Later on I started to buy also folders.
Spydercos, fallkivens and benchmades at first but later on more refined French and Italian folders with more luxurious materials.
The last three knives where customs, one from Poland, one from France and one from Spain.

You evolve in your taste.
But what changed mostly for me is that I'm no longer an "brand supporter"
I've got between ten or twenty BRKT's, but now I haven't bought one for the last 2 years I believe.
These are very good knives but if you have ten, the eleventh wouldn't be much different.
Instead I like the search for new knives with new steel, brands or makers I didn't knew about.
My friends don't known anything about knives, so I don't show the collection or talk about knives, it's only for my personal appreciation.

If you sell, you're not collecting--you're investing.

Collect what you want, use/don't use--who cares? If you like it, collect it.

I buy production knives for using not collecting. Everything I get will spend a lot of time in pocket or my ED tote bag. I have a number of Spyderco, Buck, Zero Tolerance and Kershaw blades in my growing assembly of steel.

Now granted, flipping a ZT 560 open in the office makes for a fair number of raised eyebrows but I can't remember a week go by when I hear that plaintive call from somewhere in our cube-farm, "Does anyone have a knife?" I don't go dashing right over, but as convenience happens I'll offer mine if I'm at hand. There was one comic instance where a manager was trying to get into a box containing some newly received network gear. He asked for a knife and 7 of flipped open with a resounding clack in near unison. The manager looked at the arrayed steel that appeared and asked me if I was arming everyone on our floor.

A knife is a tool and is meant to be used. Opening the mail with a ZT 560 is quite a bit of overkill to be sure. However, when you have a good blade for use the knife doesn't ask the task at hand. A Tenacious works as well in most situations. As a life long carrier of a blade I'll leave you with this bit of wisdom. Always have a knive at the ready and remember, two is one and one is none.

Don't let your blade bite you.

Collect what you want to collect...

Funny thing is, you look at most valuable collectibles from yesteryear that worth boat loads of money today are the things that nobody thought to collect, and thus are rare to find today, let alone find "mint"... Who's to say 100 years from now that mint mass produced SOG that nobody thought to collect, won't be rare and worth more then the "collector edition" sprint run from some other brand that most people who owned, hoarded?

End of the day, collect what makes you happy, provided no one gets hurt, and your bills get paid, who cares what anybody else thinks...
