I was wondering for those of you that collect customs, what makes up the majority of your collection, stock removal or forged pieces?

If you don't have enough of either to answer that, which do you prefer or is it just whatever piece catches your eye?

Also, is your collection primarily folders or fixed?

50/50 forged/stock removal
50/50 fixed blades/folders

Usually, maker first, then piece.

Just counting customs, mind you.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

FWIW, about 90% Forged, 100% Fixed.

I own a couple of tactical folders, for actual carry.

Peter your collection is amazing.

Steven, maker's name is very important, good point.

My collection is entirely of forged knives. It is comprised of only fixed blades and most of them are bowies. Other than bowies I have one small integral hunter and a bird & trout.

What sparks my interest is to see a knife I like. After that I look for more of the makers work. If I am consistantly impressed I will contact the maker and see where things go from there.

Fixed 40% - Folders 60%

Fixed - Forged 70% - Stock removal 30%

Folders - Forged (damascus) 20% - Stock removal - 80%

100% forged, 100% fixed. I will pick up a nice custom gent's folder one of these days, but the bowies keep getting in the way. ;)

Right now i am down two customs (or handmade) and two production. But AT ITS PEAK my collection was about 150 knives all stock removal and all fixed blades. I really tried to stay geared towards fighters.
What catches my eye?"FIGHTERS" First it use to be odd or not so traditional designs, Alot of sibert, dervish, early dav winch stuff etc. but as of late i like clean simply designs with big blades 10" and above that move well and feel great in the hand.
Thanks for letting me share

I am assuming this means that you are getting rid of that 'Whitewing'? You have my mailing address. :)

99.9% fixed (I just bought my first Scott Sawby folder, an absoultely beautiful Swift with stag))
80% stock removal (several of which are integrals which I'm especially fond of). Just got into the forged knives and everything I have is from Jerry Fisk or Dan Winkler.
All are variations of hunting/sporting knives
All with stag handles

I've learned that I have to buy something that I like when I see it. Seldom am I happy with an ordered knife or a custom design, as the makers interpretation and my own seldom seem to be the same.

I often get fixated on a new or different maker and will buy several of their knives (i.e. Fisk, Kressler, Loveless, Winkler, Rob Brown) before moving on...

But what a great day it is when my research finds another treasure...

The Whitewing is slick as can be, and one of two knives that I use on a regular basis. It's not technically a custom, though.

You're absolutely correct. But after chatting with Bailey about them, I was VERY pleased to hear the whole story behind the 'Whitewing' - and how VERY close to 'custom' those knives really are (grammar?)

But that wasn't my point - you stated publicly that 100% of your knives are FIXED and to me that means you'll be sending me _your_ 'Whitewing' to join the others in my own 'Whitewing' sub-collection. I wouldn't want you to state a falsehood in a public forum. ;) ;) ;)

."Will Work For Whitewings" :)

100% fixed 90% forged, but as stated earlier the maker is the most important part of any knife.

I collect a specific style of knife. I some of that style which happen to be forged and some which happen to be stock-removal. But, basically, my collection is not defined by the method of making the blade.

A collection can be defined in many different ways. It can be very specific, forged, bowie-style, fixed-blade, knives with stage handles from makers who live in Arkansas, for example. Or it can be much more broadly-defined, balisong-style knives. Each approach is equally valid.

Oh, and just because you choose to focus your collection narrowly doesn't mean that you can't occationally pick up one that doesn't fit just because you like it.

I have two customs, one by Scott Gossman, fixed blade, stock removal 5160.

The other one is a custom Buck shop 110, damascus lockback. I'm guessing forged.

Mostly fixed, mostly stock removal. This has changed several times

Randy, can I come play in your safe?

Interesting question. I never give it a second thought. I buy whatever I want with complete disregard on how the blade is made.
