Collection Liquidation

I'm down to 10 folders now, though I've owned at least 25 over the past 15 months. Sold, traded or given away most of them, but the currently lineup will not change. Four Spyderco's, three ZT's, a Brous, a LionSteel, and a TSF Beast. I've retired some, and have some going up for sale on Monday. I have 3 fixed blades I'm keeping, one I'm selling. The folders I have left pretty much come down to either being heavy users and/or fun to play with.

Users:
Manix 2 XHP
PM2
Gayle Bradley
Dragonfly 2 ZDP-189
Brous Bionic
ZT0770CF
TSF Beast

The ZT0801 and 0561 are more for my entertainment than anything else.
LionSteel Opera is my suit/slacks knife.

Despite getting rid of most of my knives in the last year, I've come to a point where there just isn't that much out there that piques my interest enough to consider spending the cash on. Only thing currently on my to buy list is a Southern Grind Bad Monkey. Christmas present for my girlfriend. She loves country music and Zac Brown Band, and wants the knife. I look at PM2 sprints occasionally, but don't think the price to steel upgrade of S35VN, and for the price of the 204P I could get a nicer knife.

I'm sure someday I'll own a Sebenza, William Henry, etc. I'm getting married in July, and the combined income will give me a little more leeway with knives (she thinks its cool I'm into knives and guns. She carries a knife daily and has gone shooting with me as well. Her current carry is a little Kershaw Shuffle which definitely comes in handy as her family are party animals).

Problem is, at least with me, is that I always end up re-buying them. (I rarely buy junk anymore.) Since a person often has to sell at a loss, liquidating and starting anew just ends up costing me money, for no appreciable gain.

Therefore, I only sell stuff that I won't miss/don't like. If I like it enough and it's of a quality that will last, I tend to keep it. I just stash it away.

Worst comes to worst, I've got a bunch of back-up items that I can fall back on if my primary goes bad/gets lost/confiscated/stolen/whatever.

I have a really hard time letting any of mine go. Until recently when I sold a budget Kershaw and a LE Leek (which was a duplicate) to fund a future purchase, the only knife I had been able to let go was an S35VN PM2 that was traded for my user 0500 MUDD.
Soooooo, I'd be happy to help you with your predicament!

So I've gone through big sell offs before. I had Chinese knockoffs, SOG, and kershaws (30+). Sold to fund spydercos and benchmades. Some I kept and ended up selling the rest in a big sell off along with some spydercos and less used benchmades to fund more benchmades and a Sebenza. Haven't regretted either move. They didn't get carried so I didn't miss them a second even though I took a loss each time.

No. Can't imagine that.
My collection started as an accumulation many years ago.
There are so many memories connected.
Some pieces were gifts. Some are old and rusty. Some I love to take out and admire.
I could imagine to part with some, but then what good would that do?

I've been considering doing this lately. In the last few months I've really only been carry one folder and fixed blade out of the 20 or so knives I have.

I have had a cull rather than a thinning twice, can't say I didn't regret it in some way but I'm glad I did it now it's all said and done. I will always keep knives that were gifts or hold some sort of value for me outside of money. Burning the house down does clear the decks and often helps you find a few more points on the knife owners horizon or even a whole new direction that may have escaped you otherwise. :)

I sold most of the folders I had. Didn't carry them. I've kept most of my fixed blades...I guess because they're all different enough to warrant carrying. I figure when it comes to folders, once one hits the sweet spot, it is much easier to buy only what one really wants. If you have the "user" mentality, I mean.

While I've never liquidated my collection entirety at one time, my rotation now shares only one knife with my rotation about a year ago.

Just goes to show how drastically things can change!

At some point I plan on thinning the herd but I don't like pay pal. Never planned on being a collector and the safe is getting crammed.Don't carry more than two knives at once anyhow.:)

I really wouldn't let paypal dissuade you from using them. It is easily the most efficient way to trade. Worth the fees to reduce the wait and hassle.

I just sent most of my knives to a dealer-friend. This is the second time I have unloaded a knife collection and... my last time.
I just need a few and I "think" I finally know what I like in a knife, fixed blade and folder.

Lemme guess.....CQC 7? ;)

You know what they say, "Use it or lose it."

Yeeeah, lol. I kinda felt like I was going to pick all of the non-users up and use them enough to show wear, but not actually carry them. All that's doing is cutting resale on something that sits in a drawer.

I have a few historically or emotionally significant knives (for me), but have bought and sold hundreds of more common knives. I love turning a knife over to someone who is excited about the model or on their own collecting journey once I've had a chance to experience it. If it's not my collection-specific type of Sebenza or an important family gift, it better not get too comfortable in my knife drawer. I'm pretty fickle that way.

With a few knives it does not make much difference either way from my point of view. I have got more than a couple of hundred knives (most likely more than three hundred) both folders and fixed blade and I feel like stuck with them: it looks like too much work to sell any significant portion of it now!

If you feel like starting fresh, then more power to you!

I'm at a financial point in my life where I need to sell stuff off just to try something new, so I don't really have a problem starting fresh.

Just sold all I owned except for my ZT 0562, Victorinox tinker and Al Mar SERE and a couple multi-tools. This is the second time I have done this. The first time I sold all my bud-k/gas station specials and bought stuff like cold steel, SOG, benchmades, Kershaw etc. Now those are all gone and I am going for Busse, Hinderer, Randall, Spartan and so on. I usually sell as my taste evolves

Not the entire collection, but at one point I had 200+ knives in my collection. I picked my top 50 and sold the other 150. Didn't last that long, though... that was only 5-6 years ago, and I'm already back up to 150+ knives. Oops... Hehehe.

If you really want to start over, go for it. Otherwise I would just get rid of the ones you wouldn't miss if there are other knives you would much rather have. As someone else mentioned, you don't want to sell knives you'll end up buying exact replacements for later.
