Collection Liquidation

If you really want to start over, go for it. Otherwise I would just get rid of the ones you wouldn't miss if there are other knives you would much rather have. As someone else mentioned, you don't want to sell knives you'll end up buying exact replacements for later.

Here's what you do to choose what to keep. In your storage area, turn all the blades the same direction. Over the next couple of months whenever you use a knife, put it back facing the opposite direction. Anything that hasn't been moved, sell it. You aren't using it.

I don't have all that many knives (10-12 folders and a few fixed blades), so it's not really a question of having a drastic selloff, but more a question of whether to sell my knives that are on the lower end so as to be able to afford higher end knives (of which I would only need a few). Hell bent on buying a small seb, I went on a bit of a selling spree a couple months back, and i sold like 4-5 knives in less than a month. But all I ended up doing with the money was spending it on more of the same (mid-level production knives)

I still plan on getting a small seb sometime soon, but I'm right back where I started and currently have no money to put towards it....I guess you could say I just didn't fully commit to the strategy, but I think it's something else. The sell off allowed me to refine the collection based on what I liked in a knife rather than just what I had accumulated over the past couple years and refused to sell. Now that my stuff has been replaced with knives that are closer to what I like, Im much happier with my collection. As of right now, I don't have many knives that I see as 'expendable', but that might change when I start getting into more high end stuff. I'm at a point where I like almost everything I have, so life is pretty good!

The only thing I need to finish my collection is the small seb. But I don't really see the need to sell anything I already have just to get it. I'll get it when Im able, and the rest of my collection will stay as it is.

At least until the small seb convinces me that I dont need any other knives......:D

Has anyone ever done it? Sold everything and started anew? I love all the knives I currently have, and I've sold or traded dozens of knives in the past couple of years, but I still get the feeling that I should just flush it down and restart. A lot of these knives don't get carried a lot. A good number of them are still here because of the "cool" factor or because they're rare and hard to find. But only a few of them actually get carried often, like my Military or my Tilt.

To be honest, the Millie and the Tilt (not pictured) would probably be the only ones that stay. But everything else? I could take it or leave it. So what do you guys think?

I'm new to knives and have no idea what these are by sight. However I would be interested in whatever you would consider a good "starter" knife. That being said let me know what prices you would be looking for.
Thanks!

I know a friend who did. Retired Army SNCO. Parted with a damascus ZT 0777 and a ZT 0888, among many other nice production knives and a few customs. He hasn't really returned to the hobby and I didn't ask him about what he kept or continues to use.

Are you hurting financially? If not, then keep all of them. I've never regretted selling a knife, but I have a BUNCH of guns I wish I'd never have sold....a S&W Mod 36 with five speed loaders, three sets of grips, and two holsters for $245 anyone?? Face palm.

I have never liquidated an entire collection, but I've sold off the equivalent of one over time.

I've been collecting/accumulating knives since 1975. Collecting is when I am trying to find a specific knife for a hole in my collection. Accumulation is buying a knife because I like/want it.

Some of them were in only poor to fair shape. If I acquire a duplicate that is in better condition than one that I already have, I try to find the a new home for the old one. That's how you sell a collection without selling a collection. :D

At one time I had a large amount of money tied up in my knife collection. I had a few favoured makers and manufacturers and basically proceeded to collect most of what they made.

Then as time went on I noticed that a lot of the new stuff coming out was just a mild repetition of previous models and ideas and so I started to lose interest in collecting. I decided to cull down the collection to only the knives that I truly liked. I ended up keeping about 20% of the entire collection. Everything else was sold off.

I have not regretted doing it at all because my favourites are still with me and more to the point (for me at least) I have not purchased any knives since the sell off - mainly because I have not seen anything that I think I must have!!! :D:)

I am more than happy with what I kept and don't need anymore.

If you have a lot of relatives, it's easy... My gosh, where'd they all come from?
Got rid of 18 folders about two wks ago, mostly Spyderco and some customs, and probably at least thirty "good" ones this year. Also, about fifty SAKS that I sent to deployed troops. My stash is really getting low...
I did sell about ten or so, in order to pay the darned c-c bill, which seems to hit about once a month.
But yeah, I'm glad I had 'em, but they just sat in cardboard boxes in the safe and did no good for anyone. Now, I hope that they do.

Holy crap that's a lot of knives:eek:
How in the world did you ever expect to need 50 SAKs? :p

No. Can't imagine that.
My collection started as an accumulation many years ago.
There are so many memories connected.
Some pieces were gifts. Some are old and rusty. Some I love to take out and admire.
I could imagine to part with some, but then what good would that do?

I feel the same way. With over 500 knives in my collection/accumulation (not users), I'd make money on some and lose money on others. Probably come out ahead in the end, but not enough to change my entire lifestyle so why bother? Many of these I've owned for twenty years, thirty years, or longer.
And hundreds of them, even if not valuable, would be quite difficult to replace. Customs, discontinued, uncommon variations, literally knives from all over the world.

I haven't done this, and probably wouldn't do this because alot of what is in my collection has been knives I have specifically hunted down. One took me a year to acquire. I normally just sell what I don't care for much, or don't use alot. But some knives are in my collection because they are variants, and I at least use one variation of it.

I have wiped the slate clean numerous times. I get bored. And while I use many of my knives some that are more expensive stay in a drawer and just get fondled as I have plenty that take care of the day to day and I see no point destroying something when there is no need. My hobbies also shift between a few other things and I never seem to have money for them all so whatever I am fixated on at the moment gets priority. Oddly enough of the probably 1000+ knives I have owned I only miss a handful of them. And when I think about it some other things I care about more would have suffered had I kept them. And since I am always wanting to try something new I try to play my cards right and buy when prices are low and sell when they are high. I strike when the iron is hot. I cant take them with me when I die and no one in my family cares about knives. So I operate under a catch and release policy. And I know some I throw back will get eaten (used or abused ). But such is the cycle of life.
