The smell gets into plastics and fabrics something fierce. it binds and then those unhealthy volatile chemicals slowly release back into the air over time. I bet it's nasty on micarta. It took 2.5 weeks to get the smoke smell out of my truck cab when a mechanic smoked in there. You can be sure the garage heard about that.
An article republished by the NIH found that cars that have been smoked in lose around 10% in resale value. It's property damage, so for all those who think smoke-haters are just whining, think again.
Next time you bid on a used knife, ask if the PO is a smoker and adjust your bid accordingly.
