College blows...

So I recently enrolled in college after being out of school for five years. During this time I became accustomed to having atleast a basic blade with me everywhere I whent. Come to find out the school is a weapons free zone, and I've recently made a concsious effort to be more rule/ law abiding.(my past behaviors were shady at best) So now being the upstanding citizen, I remove my knife before I get out of my car, but its still like pulling teeth. I guess the point of this thread is to see how many of you "strip down" before entering a weapons free zone or do you say screw it and take the chance?

I honestly haven't had to go without a knife for a while. Thankfully, here in Kansas they changed the ordinances to reclassify knives as so they aren't considered weapons anymore, and that covers the whole state, while also prohibiting anyone from setting regulations against knives within the state.
And even before that, I still took my knives in to college, though of course not high school. When in college, just about everyone I know has a knife on them, and always has, regardless of if it was legal or not at the time.

I carried an SAK in high school, and a SOG mini X-Ray Vision in college. Then again, back then knife and gun laws weren't so stringent, even here in the United Socialist State of Illinois.

I'm a law abiding citizen, myself. If it's a no-weapons zone, I leave my pocket knife in the truck. My knives are tools, not weapons, but I get it. Leaving it in the truck doesn't disarm me as I wasn't really armed to begin with.

There is the aspect of it that it's the rule and we as a society do better if we follow rules (assuming the rules are reasonable and just).

There is also the aspect that is some s4it goes down, I don't want to be on the wrong end of a conversation with LEO about why I am armed in a posted no-weapons zone. I'm not interested in becoming collateral damage when some idiot goes feral.

Your mileage may vary.

the only zones i wont carry in are the ones that have metal detectors and some says hey you cant bring it in.

I carry my ZT0801 with me on campus. Knives over 2.5" blades aren't allowed but I get around this by not starting/getting into any trouble. The cops see it clipped on my pocket (there's a police station on campus) but they don't say anything about it. Of course, I wouldn't try this if I were black or Latino because then the cops would be on it in an instant.

Edit: Just to clarify what I meant to say here: Racial profiling is a thing that police do and it sucks.

I leave it in the car or truck. I never needed a knife when I was walking around campus or going to classes.

A SAK classic is difficult for most people to get upset about... It is kind of like a "stealth knife" amongst sheeple. It flies below radar.

I stayed out of the public school circuit. When you take correspondence classes you can carry whatever you want, no problem.

Ignore stupid rules unless there is a metal detector. Civil disobience to unjust laws is an American tradition.

I often forget I have my pocket knife when I go to my kids school. Thankfully, we're in a pretty rural area where generally EVERYONE has a knife, so it's not that big of a deal as long as you aren't acting suspicious. But when I remember it, I leave it in the car.

This is pretty much my attitude. If I'm going somewhere where there may be metal detectors (sports stadium, etc), I generally leave my knife in the car. Otherwise, I always keep one on me.

Luckily, there's not much in the way of "weapon free zones" that apply to knives in CA (outside of federal property), so I'm rarely forced to bend or break laws. As much as I hate our gun laws here, the knife laws could be much worse. Plus, people seem to be pretty tolerant of them where I am, which is more than I could say back home in Ohio.

ive read stories of it not being allowed to even have a knife in your car and kids getting in trouble for it. Was one last year a student got expelled or arrested from school cause his father left a fillet knife in his own car and the song drove it to school. During some random vehicle check they found it and he got in trouble.

It all depends on how much of a ninny state you live in. Obviously, anywhere that feels the need to have "random vehicle checks" is going to be more strict.

Ignoring a university's "stupid rules" is a great way to get expelled. College can be expensive, and if you get expelled for violating university rules, you don't get a refund. And good luck getting accepted at another college when they find out you were expelled for a weapons violation.

Even if there are no metal detectors, it still might be possible to have ones knife discovered. Like for example- if it falls out of your pocket or bag and someone sees it. And if I recall correctly, campus security have the right to search students (empty your pockets, bags, purses, etc). Several times I've heard of campus security searching students when there was a weapons scare on campus. None of this may sound fair, but no one has a constitutional right to attend the college of their choice. If a student violates the rules, or refuses to let themselves be searched, the university has the right to expel them. Why take the chance just to carry a knife that you aren't going to use anyway.

Sometimes in life, to get what you want (like a college education) you have to compromise on your personal desires (like carrying a knife). And it's no different in the adult world of having a job. Many workplaces don't allow knives. And if you ignore the "stupid rules" at your job, you get fired. And good luck getting another job when perspective employers find out that you were fired for violating the company's weapons policy.

In California, it is illegal under state law to carry a knife on ANY college campus with a blade longer than 2.5 inches (California penal code 626.10). People attending college should do more than read their university's rules, they should also check their state laws.

So is sending people to jail. The US has the largest inmate population on earth. You can call your illegal actions "civil disobedience", but the cops, prosecutor, and judge, are going to call your illegal actions "crimes". Good luck violating a weapons law in this country and trying to win your freedom by calling it "an act of civil disobedience" in court.

Here in California it is also illegal to carry a locking folder, or any knife with a blade longer than 2.5 inches on a public school campus K-12 (CA pc 626.10). When I go to my kids school, I carry a small non-locking folder. If I need to defend myself or anyone else while I'm there, I have my hands and feet. If I were close enough to a threat to effectively use a knife for self-defense, I would be close enough to use my hands and feet. And there are usually lots of metal folding chairs around which can serve as effective improvised defensive weapons if the need might arise.

I always carried a knife in college, it was usually my mini grip or a Damascus chive. I would often cut fruit in the cafeteria and nobody batted an eye. Heck, I even grabbed lunch with this cute girl once and cut my sandwich with my mini grip, she didn't even care, she asked me to cut hers too!

Just keep the blade under 3" and don't pull out something like a karambit and you'll be fine.

I always feel naked without a knife. But I'll give you a little tip people won't go bananas when they see something like a swiss army knife or a multitool. I've had my leatherman out in front of security and a professor doing work and none of them said anything. They're universally recognized so people don't see them as evil baby killing weapons of mass destruction and more as tools. Its the big honking tactical blades that you see nowadays that might get you in trouble

Actually, this only applies to those visiting a campus. There is an exemption for college students and employees.
I know, because I work on a college campus. I ran it past the administration and campus police for confirmation.
