College Carry

Yea, I don't want to draw attention to myself. I's actually kind of surprising how nobody noticed I carried one until Friday. I've been with these people for over a semester. I have a Blade HQ sticker on my computer. They should be able to connect the dots. I do plan on a neck knife in the near future, but for work in a grocery store. I was looking at the Brous Silent Soldier but was ecstatic when SOG said they were doing a production version of it. Now I'm rambling...

I would just carry whatever you normally carry and not get caught. Its not like their are stockton police to spare to deal with you. where i go to school is in a more ag based community college in nor cal and I carry pretty much carry whatever I am feeling. I use my edc almost ever day for food prep and no one has ever looked twice even with a spydie resilience. I have seen guys with shrade sharp fingers on their belt and no ones cared. And as for the school rules, Im pretty sure they can't pull any legal action as long as you are within the states restrictions. all they can do is suspend or kick you out.

I go to college in Northern California, I'm only in my second semester and I've seen a few people with knives clipped to their pockets. In California, there aren't any laws that say you can't carry a knife at a college, but my college's rules say no fixed blades. All folders are fine where I live.

I carry a knife every day, and I always have my stuff on me when I go to class. Leatherman, Knife, Lighter, all of my EDC. I've never had a problem, and I've pulled out my Benchmade 710 to cut open the packaging on my new calculator and other school stuff. No problems with anything at my college, the 710 is the biggest knife that I've used while at school, but I've also used my ZT 0301. No weird responses or reactions, some people looked, but no one seemed to care. I've never really had a problem with knives where I live.

I like northern California, mostly everyone up here is level-headed and they don't panic when they see a knife or a handgun. (Shasta County).

Don't underestimate "zero tolerance". Just because you haven't been "caught" or gotten into trouble yet for violating campus rules doesn't mean you won't. All it takes is for ONE person to report you "carrying a weapon" and you are caught. Then what? Who's paying your tuition? How are you going to feel if you get expelled for carrying a knife in violation of school rules when you knew you were violating the rules? How do you think your parents would react?

I believe in carrying knives, but taking the chance of blowing your education just to carry a knife or knives that you probably don't really need, or will ever likely need, seems like a bad idea to me. And it sounds like something you could really come to regret.

I've never understood this idea of "Well I know it's illegal/against the rules, but I haven't gotten caught yet so that makes it ok/safe for me to keep doing it".

But hey, it's your life and your education, not mine. Good luck.

My "school" allows this:
possessing or using any knife, sword or machete having a blade longer than four (4) inches or, in the case of a knife with a mechanism to lock the blade in place when open, longer than three (3) inches;

I point people to the weapons policy all of the time. I am often amazed by the ignorance exhibited by some of the most highly educated I have ever met.

Especially not if you pepper spray them 1st!! :D

Agreed. In my opinion, the best self-defense product on the market is the ASP Key Defender OC/Kubotan combo. Using non-lethal self defense items, even in a very violent and brutal self-defense capacity, will spare you legal problems and tort claims in tons of situations.

Grab an ASP Key Defender and Kershaw chive. Great EDC cutting and self defense!

Just checked my school and they appear to have a zero tolerance policy towards knives. Amusing, since our campus is filled with rich, dumb kids and surrounded by an impoverished area, with plenty of crimes committed on the students. Outside of school, I follow the "don't get caught" philosophy, but on campus I don't even bother. The liberal arts don't exactly demand a knife too often, although I am supposed to bring a knife in for my next Environmental Biology class. My professor has no clue what she is getting in to :D

I carry a folding knife all the time on campus. We're limited to any folder under 3.5" so long as it can't be "readily used as a weapon."

I generally carry a Case Trapper or an aluminum Vic Farmer. I also carry a Vic Classic, and generally use it for almost everything.

If you want to carry your bigger folders I'd get a tiny knife too and just use it. No one ever looks twice at Swiss Army knives.

Its funny that you brought this up because i carried a pocket knife all through college and never thought to check if it was acceptable. I live in indiana which has lenient knife laws. No switch blades or throwing stars.

Go by the rules, I attend Virginia Tech, and would not for an instant think about breaking one of the carry rules because they are so jumpy, with that being said, the school limits us to any blade under 4 inches, so it is a bit easier than 2.5, but 2.5 is plenty, check out some of the threads on here about carrying nothing but a case peanut.

I carried a Buck 110 throughout college. Not sure if it was against the rules or not. Since I also had a small sodbuster I don't think I ever once deployed the 110 where anybody saw me. Once, walking home at about 2am on a Saturday night I ran into some potential trouble...which I worked hard to avoid. But I got the 110 out and held it in my hand un-opened. There was no trouble, nobody saw the 110, and I never opened it...but I sure did some fast walking that night!!!

Yea, I figured my Leatherman wouldn't cause trouble. I guess it's because half my class is preforming arts majors...

I've never had anyone give a second look to multi-tools and SAKs, and that includes office administrative staff and the like (people who are not especially adept using hand tools). Some of them get nervous around something the size of a Dragonfly or Flash 1, but they don't give a second thought to the longer blade on my Leatherman Wave or Charge. Go figure...

2.5 inches, which is useless in most situations.

(snicker)

Anyway, 2.5" is plenty of knife, even to cut a bagel. Carry a larger knife if you want, just keep it hidden. For everything else, get a Swiss Army Knife. Nobody gets their nipples in a twist over one of those. Nobody worth listening to, anyway.
