College Carry

(snicker)

Anyway, 2.5" is plenty of knife, even to cut a bagel. Carry a larger knife if you want, just keep it hidden. For everything else, get a Swiss Army Knife. Nobody gets their nipples in a twist over one of those. Nobody worth listening to, anyway.

Best advise here so far.

I teach on a CA campus that has a more permissive policy, but my advice is that you not violate the campus rules. If you find yourself suspended, expelled or declared a persona non grata on a private school campus it can have all sorts of ramifications for you trying to transfer into another school and having to explain that you were kicked off campus for violating the weapons policy. That right there puts you into the pile that gets extra scrutiny before admission.

Carry a traditional folder or SAK with a blade under the limit for cutting tasks and carry a walking stick and a tactical pen. Any problem you can't handle with a walking stick is already going to be a problem with a folding knife and the campus cannot exclude a walking stick without running into problems with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

I've never had a problem carrying on campus...going on 6 years (Louisville, Ky for undergrad and Cincinnati, Oh for grad school) and the most I've gotten was "oh! that's handy". The only people I ever catch crap from are my friends who actually know that I'm carrying a knife. For the most part, as long as nobody had prior knowledge of it being there, everyone on my campus just looks a little queezy (maybe) then goes back to their day. I see plenty of my fellow students carrying knives as well.

A length of 2.5" is not useless in many environments. I work in one of the most anal environments imaginable (meaning The Man has a 2.5" limit and would take anything more very seriously as a bad career move) and my collection of small knives is just fine. It's an environment where it's highly unlikely that anything requiring a larger blade will happen. I have a small first aid kit with a TOPS Sparrow Hawke, 2" blade that will do whatever first aid in an office requires.

Dude I went to school for culinary art in NC and by rule had to carry my own kitchen knives every day with the center piece being an 8" chef knife. However, we weren't allowed to carry a pocket knife!! Hell the "security guard" tried to take it from me a few times. I almost broke his hand one time when he snuck up behind me and tried to take it.

My college had a 3" blade restriction. Found myself carrying a Spyderco Delica/Persistence on most days. Boy am I glad those 4 years are over.

I remember a few times eating at the dining hall on campus I had to use my knife to cut my food. The knives they give you are some cheap plastic contraption that I wouldn't trust to spread my butter, there is no way it was going to cut my food. So I pull out my knife and start cutting my food. Long story short: some girl called campus PD and tried to get me in trouble. The officer arrived and asked to see my knife, I handed it to him and he inspected it. He said "Oh, nice" and handed it back. When the girl confronted him about me having a knife, he pulled out his own: beat up Paramilitary 1. Made a new friend in campus PD.

I'm at Penn State. Our only knife policy prohibits:

"Any knife with a blade larger than that of a folding pocket knife; dagger; razor or other cutting instrument, the blade of which is exposed in an automatic way by switch, push-button, spring mechanism, or otherwise. "

To me, this means any folding knife is ok, including my CS Voyager and Rat 1.

One time, I pulled out my 3" Kabar Dozier to open a package in a study lounge, and a girl near me yelled, "Oh my God! You carry a big ass knife with you?!"

My response, "What big ass knife? This is little." Everyone else laughed at her.

I'm also a college student and carry a knife every day on campus. I'm pretty sure the rule is 3". I carry a 943 98% of the time and have never had an issue. Even the people who used to look at me funny for taking it out and using it now ask if I have it when they need something cut.
