Combat Folder: Opinions

Nakk77, do you have a store within reasonable distance that you can get some of them in hand or maybe an upcoming gun-show?

Some are great in design and it seems like they picked your brain when designing it, but in hand actually gripping it and operating it feels awkward and clumsy.

I just picked up a SOG pentagon elite 2, it has a 5 inch combo blade and a shark-tooth tip. the lock is rated to withstand a thousand pounds of pressure. It is a beast that does not weigh to much and fits nicely in the pocket. It can be found within your price range.

Interesting didn't know about this one. I'll have to check it out!! thank you.

SOG isn't really in the same league as Spyderco, Benchmade, Kershaw (and Emerson). I wouldn't touch them with a 10ft pole, even in that price range, but that's just my opinion.

Putting the practicality of using a knife as a SD device aside, I think the Benchmade axis lock is a poor choice as a SD knife. I've written about this a bit in the past, and if you search around on the forums, you should find a thread about it, but I believe it's too easy for the axis lock to be disengaged, either by you, or someone else.

I wasn't going to post, but this idea keeps popping up.
My primary training knife is a BM Griptilian trainer. I have NEVER had the lock disengage, whether by "cutting" (some people say you'll pull the lock back on certain cuts; don't hold it that weird way if that happens), in sparring, during disarming practice, in the "folder into the fight" drills, never.
Perhaps the idea got started by someone with a faulty lock, or someone with no idea of how to grip a knife; I don't know.

I wondered about that comment too, if that would be a problem I was going to rule out the Benchmade 710. I'm pretty much down to the 710 or the Military. Not big on the tip down only carry of the military but like the rest of the knife. thought about a para 2 to fix that problem, but can't seem to find them in stock anywhere.

I've got about 190 total to spend so I am trying to get one of these and then maybe will pick up a CS recon or Resilience or maybe even a benchmade ambush also to try out.

I wasn't going to post as well, but tip down carry for longer folders puts your thumb near the pivot where it is near the thumbhole or thumbstud when you pull it out of your pocket.

Hey Charlie, do you do all of your videos in the wife's bathroom?

Just wondering.

Knife was cool though! :D

I will throw my vote in for the Emerson CQC-8, CQC-7 or a Military. But it will be hard to find those under 50$

I don't normally do lock backs but I like my cheapo CS Spartan and it can be had for your price range and it's wave operated.

yeah emerson is a little above what i'm looking to spend. Geez I've researched this into the ground held both military and 710 and still can't decide.

like the axis lock (even though some concerns came up on here) of the 710

Like the sharpness of the military. Don't like huge over sized handle of military (i have small hands. not a big fan of thin liner locks. And it's tip down only.

hmm. maybe I've made my decision.

Here's a link to the thread I made a little while ago

The axis lock is a fantastic lock, and assuming the omega springs are working, I believe it's the strongest lock around, BUT, the opening mechanism is exposed, which can lead to trouble for the OP's use.

Nakk77, just curious why you want a folder? You'd be better served by either an auto or f/b Molle'ed to your chest, but that's just my unwanted opinion.

What martial art do you train in that you are taught folder combat, if I may ask plz? I don't think anyone except Jet Li and "maybe" Chuck Norris could trap your stabbing hand and disengage the locking mechanism... :p

Jet Li could probably hand it back to you fully disassembled! In the movies anyway. :D

I have had an AXIS lock knife in my right front pocket every single day for the last 4+ years (and used them frequently before that) and use it multiple times a day for anything a knife can be used for. I just don't see the concern of it accidentally being unlocked as an issue and have never read about it happening. Even using a thrust cut the tendency would be to push the lock forward which should improve the lock security.

I can't imagine a real world situation where it could be unlocked. And if it was you would have to torque the knife for the blade to start to close and I would think it would be immediately noticed. But that is purely hypothetical. I guess under the right circumstances anything can happen but that is not limited to only the AXIS lock.

The AXIS lock is a popular and proven design and I would not worry about a theoretical failure that has never been documented to my knowledge. Just my opinion.

Of those listed, I'd vote for the 710 and the Recon 1. After using my Rajah II to do so limbing in the yard, I'm way impressed with the lock. Hard to beat the versatility of the 710 in that price range.

My apologies if it has already been mentioned, but I recommend the waved Spyderco Endura.

In fact, carry two.
One in each front pocket.;)

+1 Love 'em both. Look at that sexy blade on the 710 - wow!
