Combat Folder: Opinions

Well, youth will be served you know? Some old Korean Master said in about a 30 yr old Black Belt magazine, that "we're all on the same path, only in different spots on the way." I can read from your posts that you're quite knowledgeable.

Thank you.:)
I find the best way to keep learning stuff is realizing how much more there is to learn.

CM with your energy level displayed in your vids at times, I would have loved to have seen a 2 foot downward spine whack test! :D

Ever see this vid? Now THAT is a spine whack!

They can say what they want about CS stuff but I love these big espada's with these Demko locks

Like to see any of the custom folders Strider etc. hang 600 + pounds on them

May I add that I can close the liner on my emerson super cqc-7
with the meat of my index finger when I clench my hand.

Had to post back about combat blades & share an
I love knives, but knife combat is easily trumped by anybody who can squeeze a trigger with a degree of accuracy. You've been served. ;)

Depends, if he hasn't drawn yet, you already have the knife in your hand, and you're within 20 feet of him (most confrontations occur within 7-10 yards), he could be a dead man if you wanted him to be. In that short distance, you could be on top of him before he was able to draw his weapon.

This is why my paranoid butt usually keeps a hand on my left front pocket (where I have a folder, usually BM Grip or CS Lawman), because ultimately I can produce that faster than I can reaching back to my hip to draw my pistol.

I can pull my 9mm carried IWB just as fast as I can grab my folder in my pocket. I have to open my folder before it is useful as a weapon and I only have to squeeze the trigger on my gun. I don't think a knife is a good weapon so I will take a gun over a knife every single time. Regardless, nothing is going to be pulled unless I feel my life is in eminent danger. If I pull my gun I'm not going to say anything or try to scare anyone. If my gun gets pulled the trigger is going to be squeezed a second later. Carrying a deadly weapon is not a toy or a way to cause a reaction from a person. It is only there to save my life and is not to be taken lightly.

I agree with the last statement...but the statement about the knife vs gun is inaccurate. A far greater percentage of stab wounds are fatal than gunshot wounds.

the situation I'm describing has the person close enough where a knife would be a more logical choice. I don't carry 31 rounds for no reason.....but I don't carry knives for no reason, either. Memphis, Tn, where I currently live, has both a high murder rate as well as an almost unbelievable gang membership rate (would you believe, anywhere from 5-10% of the population of metro Memphis?). Therefore, I've taken the time to become very well trained in how to use both tools to protect not only my life, but the lives of loved ones as well.

I feel that "combat" knives are something that every person needs to get out of their system.

Having carried an Emerson CQC-7 and a Super Karambit(not both at the same time, I'm not THAT paranoid FFS), I can tell you that they were both crushing disappointments. Not so much the knife quality(though the coating got stripped off from just carrying the knives), but rather the FUNCTION. The chisel grind makes sharpening complicated, and together with the thick blade, even slicing an apple is a pain, which got me to think about its performance on human flesh. Given how hard it was to do even general cutting, I had a nasty feeling that it probably wouldn't do much more than to give an attacker a shallow cut. Whereas my ZT 0301 cut me on 3 occasions, and each cut was about a quarter of an inch deep from just a LIGHT accidental touch.

Besides which, carrying a purpose built weapon that will only ever see the light of day if you ever happen to use it makes me frustrated toting that heavy weight around that I never use.

The wave feature is admittedly the fastest way to open a folding knife, and that's about all I'll praise Emerson for, a bit of protruding metal from the blade.

I would just suggest getting a nice waved Endura or Delica and call it a day. Because the blade is cut down to make the hook for the wave, it ought to cut better than their saber ground counterparts. A ZT 0350 is also a nice tough folder with plenty of utility. As for Emerson, I believe a nice plain edge Commander(probably a mini in order to fit your price range) would do nicely.

A knife is a tool first, its function for self-defense just happens to be a convenient coincidence.

That is a 3' travel mega spine whack Charlie Mike! A bunch of them too! :D That's kind of what your custom Navajah is right, in a manner of speaking, but tougher? One bad*ss knife. ;)

But I would never bet my life on the wave feature. I've owned an Emerson and sometimes the blade would not deploy though I thought I snagged it like all the other times. I would either get a Kydex made specifically for deploying via wave or a fixed blade. Still, I'd take the f/b.

For what it's worth;:D On every frame/liner lock folder I get there is one thing I immediately do. That is to give the locking liner more bend to give the lock greater tension, more stiffness. Some folks don't like to do this as they say it shortens the life of the lock, but on a ZT0200 I have used for three years the lock has not moved across the blade tang any that I can tell. That may be from steel on steel, but I've never really noticed any movement on the ti on steel folders I have. Anyway, I didn't check the lock, via spine tap, before I did this on the ZT0200, but I did afterward and it passed with no problems. Of course I do spine tap's and not spine WHACK'S!:) I do 5 quick and successive hits on the blade spine and figure if that doesn't cause failure I'm alright.

I don't know if folks would agree but I've fine tuned a couple of linerlocks and framelocks and got the lock-up I wanted. ;)

Disclaimer: I didn't buy them from anyone or company who sells or is mentioned on this forum!! :D

This. The wave's performance varies depending on the cut of your pockets and I've had knives that failed to lock up or open all the way when waved out.
