As a 20-year Army veteran, I'm here to tell you that, in the thick of the fray, the first thing I reached for was my $99.99 Combat Pen.

Can anyone give me a good argument for this thing?

Boy, there's nothing like titling a thread "A deal at only $99.99" and starting off your post with a link to a commercial website to make a moderator ban you and despam your post. I managed to stop squeezing the trigger a few ounces short of letoff -- let's see if the next moderator to see this realizes it's not spam in time. :D

Sorry about that, Chief. I didn't even think about the link showing. This thing just had me shaking my head. I saw it at Brigade Quartermasters and asked the clerk about it. He just shrugged.
I know its meant to have dual applications (pen/kubaton), but...

They are all too spendy for my budget. I wish I had a small metal lathe!

Dale, I've made a few kubatons, for friends, on a drill press. Using either polymer or aluminum stock, some files and sandpaper.
Like you said, these others are a bit too spendy.

it's expensive, but it would work as an impact weapon for those who live in areas where Kubotans are illegal to have. I like my Rotring, but i also have a nice custom pen. more cuz i write a lot as an attorney and like metal, than thinking i'd have to "apply" it to someone. sure i could, but ... in any case, as pens go, that is pretty cheap for a nice pen.

A kimber at $99.99 is a steal. A SOG midnite tiger at $99.99 is a deal. A fancy pen that's "tacti-cool" is neither:thumbdn:

remember, not everyone can carry a gun; not every municipality allows even marginally useful knives (2.5" 'round here). at $99 it's not that it's a "deal", but it's a nice, solid metal pen, that CAN be used for something other than a pen, that one will keep for a long time. $99 ain't bad for that.

Well I think they shine in places like an office or college. I would send my daughter to college with one in a heart beat. $70 bucks ? less then one text book......

Not out of place on a college anytime anywhere. A Kubaton? It will draw attention and questions as will a flashlight. Why do you have a light ? but its daytime . My oldest runs with a Kubaton and sometimes carries a fenex lp2 light that is shaped like one. people can understand a girl carring one while out running etc. But if she carried it at her Parks and Rec job or at school that would not work out well, a pen ? she needs to have one.

A pen can be in the hand and not even cause a second glance . Walking around with a Kubaton in your hand or waistband with be noticed, a pen is something all college kids carry.

Plus I can say my kids carry as little as possible, a SD tool that is also something one must carry on campus will ensure they have a SD tool at hand.

Or you could just get Cold Steel's Combat Marker for $6.

You've gotta be @#%^%ing kidding me.

Anyway, that Timberline/Lightfoot pen does look pretty cool to me...and pretty overpriced. Especially without even telling you what kind of refills it takes, or offering them on their website.

what pen?? that is just a link to timberline.

You gotta click on the tactical section its under that.

I would rather buy a Cross pen as thats what many modern kuboton techniques were designed for.

I also carry a mini Mag Light which works just as well if not better.

I have never heard of anyone being hassled over a mini mag, i carried one on a plane last month. If you are worried buy a pink or bright blue one that will pass almost any inspection.

I paid a little more than that for my Allen Elshewitz pen.

In any environment where a large folder or other "weapon" could get me in trouble I carry this in my shirt pocket. Who knows; someday it might give me that little bit of an "edge" to move the odds a little bit my way in a tough situation.

It writes really well too.

I seriously laughed at first. Defense is being able to use what you have avaible and if you have an enhanced pen so much the better. Problem is that my pens keep doing the walkies.

fulloflead: I actually like the shape and design of yours much better, it actually seems like a defensive tool and not just an overpriced bick made to look like a gun.

If I worked in an office setting where a knife or other weapons were not allowed I would seriously consider one of the ones you have.

.

I carry 2 knives and a flashlight clipped to my pockets at college everyday and have never been asked any questions or looked at funny. I hardly think anyone would even take notice to a kubaton.

Just to throw a little $$ perspective into this thread.

I collect vintage pens, and I can tell you, that even at my relatively low budget levels, $99 is not a lot of money for a good pen. There are some makes and models that start, brand new, at several thousand dollars.

Now that's crazy, spending that much money on a pen . . . .
