Combat Pen...A deal at only $99.99

$99 is not a lot of money for a good pen. There are some makes and models that start, brand new, at several thousand dollars.

And they keep sending me catalogs for them! :)

Fortunately, when I bought my Mont Blanc Meisterstuck, it was only about $30, and in 1969, I thought that was a lot for a pen ... then the price of gold went up, and up, and up.

Anyway, that Timberline/Lightfoot pen does look pretty cool to me...and pretty overpriced. Especially without even telling you what kind of refills it takes, or offering them on their website.

I've had mine now for a couple of days, and I do like it. It is very lightweight, comfortable to hold for scribbling, drawing, or extended writing.

Problems: the cap stays on but not when you're writing. It won't hold on the back of the pen. Refills: can't find them anywhere online. Can't find a reasonable substitute, since they are only 3" long. I found a possible substitute and I'll see when it gets here if it's a go. If not, this is the most expensive disposable pen I've ever owned. :)

Just another form of kubaton to carry where they won't let you take weapons. http://www.knife-depot.com/knife-57653.html?SSAID=74801 gives a more direct photo.

(snip)

Of course that link has them at 79.99

I had a similar one in Ti that I sold. I can tell you that it raised a few eyebrows in security lines but I always got it through. Just make sure you always have ink in it because I had to write on stuff a few times.

Thanks, STeven, but I tried one of those. It needs a refill like the SPRB with the wide shoulder. The SUF will just drop right out the front.

If all else fails, I'll stop by one of the monster stationery stores in NYC. I know a couple that never failed me. :)

I have a couple of emails to some pen refill sites since I couldn't find the refill.

The current pen cartridge I have in my Timberline pen is a "Schmidt 4876 M"

At the Timberline site, they recommend going to the Fisher pen site:

http://www.timberlineknives.com/product/tactical/combat_pen.mgi?mgiToken=26F8F20374F41961A6

Which then brings you here:

http://www.spacepen.com/Public/Home/index.cfm

So according to Timberline, it looks like it should just take a fisher space pen refill.

Edit: Negatory on the space pen refill. Just tried mine in the Timberline pen and it was too long.

Edit (2): I'm wondering if this is the refill Timberline refers to on the Fisher site:

http://www.spacepen.com/Public/Products/PenRefills/

Fisher Pressurized Refills For 1950 Paper Mate Pens, Fine Point
Stock No: SPSF
U. S. Price: $ 4.00

Fits .120" diameter X 4.2" long 1950s Paper Mate Pens. Blister Carded for Peg Board Display.

I have an email to Timberline to see if I can get an answer.

Forget it. We need a refill shaped like the space pen refill with the thick barrel and narrow neck. The SPSF will just slide right on out. Besides, it's too long. The Schmidt is 3" total: 1" neck & 2" barrel.

Wait for me to get my order and I'll tell you if the small refill I have on the way is OK.
(It's a 3" rollerball, which I would prefer to a ballpoint.)

Ok, I got two replies on refills via email.

First was from theinkflow.com web site:

Dear Sir:

We look at our Schmidt catalog and we were unable to find the desire refill, this does not mean that Schmidt does not produce such refill; it is more likely that the US Distributor do not bring that refill from Schmidt Germany.

In our experience the Schmidt refills tend to be interchangeable between models, this means that for example if a pen uses the Schmidt 888F refill the 588 will fit as well as the 5124 etc.

In any case all the available Schmidt refills can be seen at:

http://www.theinkflow.com/schmidt_ref1.htm

Thank you for the inquiry.

Sincerely.

The second was from the Timberline people:

Thank you for the inquiry.

The Fisher Space Pen Refill is a Pressurized Refill, Stock #SPRB. I think
there may be other refills that fit. We used this one because it was unique.

So take the emails as you will...

CEM, think about the size. Take 3 AA batteries end to end and that's about the size of it. Most women have smaller hands -- unless she likes large pens. It is very light in weight, though.

Anyway, guys, I should get my refill order in a few days and I may have good news for us then. If not I'll go into New York and line us up a source, hopefully one that will do mail order, too.

LCP Lightfoot Combat Pen
www.timberlineknives.com

As a 20-year Army veteran, I'm here to tell you that, in the thick of the fray, the first thing I reached for was my $99.99 Combat Pen.

Well, we civilians are routinely denied the armaments that are provided in the Army. I would much prefer to carry an M14 (I bet you remember those, ;-) , but they would bring unwanted attention at our public library.

Can anyone give me a good argument for this thing?

Using a pen in a self defense situation is more effective than pummeling with your fist, and least likely to injure your hands. Also, in today's litigious society, you'd probably be less likely to end up in legal troubles if you put a baddie down with something like this, as opposed to, say, a Browning M2.

I have no good news as of today. The refill I hoped would fit is slightly too large a diameter. That leaves us nowhere. I'll have to see what I can find in New York. :(

Mr Lightfoot made a very poor choice, selecting a refill so hard to find, so different from the general standard.
