Combatchet Proto WIP

Looks good! Also,l when someone is cranking on the handle to break wire, this way he/she is not having to worry about the serations and sharp edges!!!

Bruce,Thanks.Getting them waterjet cut would definately cut down of scrap on this design.I'm still trying to decide what steel I should use.:confused:
Now it's time to design the draw sheath,I'll post in a little while.:D
 
This is what I was thinking for a draw sheath,Not sure what the width of the nylon strapping.Slots can be adjusted to size.Need some input on the sheath.:confused:Can anybody see anthing on the sheath I might have change or include?

hardheart,Incorporating a saw into this design seemed feasible.The saw section is 1.5" long,Through input,I can decide what might work.You think the saw is not neccesary?Let me know.:D
 
BTY I was told for military application the sheat has to have two method of being secured to the blade. This is for knives and may apply to your hatchet as well. Many use a strap that can be undone and then a clip or some type of detent to hold the sheath in place when the strap is removed.

I think I have to agree on the saw, not sure the increase in level of complexity and work required to make the saw is justified when you can chop.
 
Patrick,This is the extended kydex detent to the hole + additional strapping fixture.Think it will work?

Saw? I must have missed that. I dont think it needs a saw. Too complicated and not functional enough anyway.

I think it would be cool if you had a stack of them cut out and sell them as blanks so people could add their own bevels, handles, sheath ect. You could offer them in CPM 154 and also in A2 or even 1084.
 
chewbacca,5160 is some tough stuff.Would the military units that would use this in combat be concerned with rust in the field?I originally was thinking stainless.But stainless in a lot of cases,Does not have the toughness like alot of high carbon steels.
 
very nice! that thing is going to be sweet made from some .25" steel!
i really enjoyed watching the progression of this project! and will enjoy even more watching it be made!
my 2 cents: i would definitely include a lanyard! with the handle shaped the way it is there is nothing to lock your pinky in. and if you are swinging it hard (for its intended purpose) it may get wet and slippery. i think the lanyard would be the way to go rather than a "J" shaped handle (a-la leashless ice axe).
 
Josh,Actually there's 2 lanyard holes.One at the top of the handle & end near the impact point.A lanyard was the first design element I incoporated in this design.:D
 
I do alot of work in A2 and its very rust resistant but is a tool steel, I would use it in this application. Since it is air hardening there are a number of places to get heat treat.
 
Patrick,I'm leaning toward A2.In this application,What would you recommend for Rc hardness?

Bruce has a interesting idea.Cut a bunch of blanks,Let people do what they do with it.:D
