Come One, Come MALL NINJAS!!

Who are you? No, who are you really?

As a kid, did you grow up watching Kung-Fu cinema for four hours straight daily?

Nope I grew up watching Big time wrestling back when Professional wrestlers were fat guys who really hurt each other. Back when guys like Killer Kowalski got his name because he knocked off a guys caulliflower ear in the ring. It was only on one day a week (saturday at 1:00 pm and you had to tune in the the fuzzy Toledo uhf station)

Did you buy the first Asian inspired blade that cost $7.99, with a set of three throwing stars for $3.99?

Even at the young age of 13 or 14 I recognized all those kung foo weapons were really cheaply made junk.

Then again . . who will ever come out a claim that they are truly a Death-Defying MALL NINJA?

Here in Detroit we call these Ninjas

I have seen tham at Fairlane town center mall in Dearborn so I suppose they qualify as mall ninjas.

all the gear no idea...

if you dont mind telling me, hows do you catch bores with a knife? much like jon locke on LOST? thats a point, anyone know what knives jon locke had on lost?oh, and what is that knife your holding as i guess thats you and you guide with the two staffs...

You don't catch Boars you kill them. Knife maker Larry Harley used to make large bladed knives to use on Arkansas feral pig knife hunts. They used dogs to track then chase the pig to tire it out then the dogs get ahold of the pig then the hunter comes in and pushes the blade through the pigs ribs to cut an artery or pierce the heart and bleed the pig out.

Since Locke doesn't have dogs I assume he is setting up traps or snares along game trails or using spears made from wood and ambushing the boars on game trails.

He uses the knives to quarter and dress the boar.

Ninja is Japanese. Japanese has no plural form. 1 Ninja or 100 Ninja, it doesn't matter. Just like Samurai. Take for example the confusion over the title of the movie The Last Samurai, they were referring to the group, not an individual.
Actually, both "ninja" and "ninjas" are acceptable.

If one were to look at many of my knives, they might peg me as a mall ninja. I like tactical folders for their look and because they tend to be strong and function well. But I do not think I am a mall ninja. I do not like swords or fantasy knives. Or ninjas stars, or ninja knuckles. I likes knives as tools.

I like black coatings because they don't show finger prints (which I feel driven to wipe off of uncoated blades every seconds), and I like G-10 because it is grippy.

I do not like Dark Ops, but I do like Strider, Emerson, the AFCK, Military, MOD ATFK etc... they are good users that look how they do for practical reasons.

I do not think of knives as a combat tool. I think "operators" sounds stupid and know that soldiers do not use knives for anything more "cool" than I do at work. They open MREs, I open boxes, So tactical.

Yeah, Jagdterriers or Laikas. Still, it dangerous, and they shoot the boar anyway.

jon locke in lost, as you sound like you havdent seen it, crashes on the island after being refused from a aussie 'walkabout'.

when they run out of food he pulls out his briefcase which to everyyones suprise/horror is full of knives.

they then team up and regularly go boar hunting. it also hasa couple of scenes with him throwing the knives into trees and teaching one of the kids how to do it.

if anyone has seen it , youll see that the knives looked like decent pieces of kit, but i saw those episodes ages ago. he has plenty of fixed blades abd some folders. any clues?

... :D Even the Ren Faire players were probably too social (and fit) to be compared to a mall ninja...

True that. They may be Nerds, but they are FIT nerds with swords that can actualy take some punishment. :D

Mall Ninja = black coated blades
Coated Blades = High Carbon Steel

High Carbon steel that will rust with no more water present than in a humid environment. 0170-6 is a great example of this. M2 as well. 52100 somewhat less so but steel (intentional pun) a danger.

Coated Blades = Stainless? Well, no need to discuss that.

Paddling Man,

I've had less rust worries with M2 than with 52100. When cutting up staghorn sumac (an evil swamp tree), my 52100 knives immediately turn black where they touch the sap, but my M2 blade stays fat, dumb, and happy.

Really?? I'm surprised, base on the reputation of M2. My reference to 0170-6 & 52100 was literal while the M2 comment was anecdotal.

Was the M2 bead blasted or satin? In other words, any treatment that inhibited its' rusting?

The edge was hollow ground on a 14" wheel on a belt sander. It's kind of satiny and looks uber-cool. The edge is almost mirror finished. The edges on my other tree-hacking knives that did discolor from the sap were mirror-finished 52100 and S7 (from some companies you might know about ;) ). M2's tendency to rust is satanically overrated. The folks whom it rusts on either are at the sea more than me or have a body chemistry that would rust plastic.

"Mall Ninja = black coated blades"

I don't abide by that.

I like black coated blades. They don't attract as much attention from a distance as a flashing, mirror finish, assist in sharpening (how far up your going), help let you see where in the blade your doing your cutting, etc.

Besides, other blade coating colors may be possible, but hot pink is still a custom option in general.
