I have spent countless hours on here and planned on spending some money on equipment to start making knives myself but... Of all things required to make knives I find myself short on time.
The reason I am writing is because my wifes' friend lost her husband in Afghanistan. I see the family somewhat regularly and cannot keep from thinking about what it must be like to losie your father at such a young age. I would really like to present Art's son with a commemorative knife that his mom can hold on to until he is old enough to carry it.
The story is posted here. http://news.soc.mil/releases/News%20Archive/2007/June/070616-05.html
and here is a picture of Art and his son- http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content?topic=62893.%25d
I waited to post/ request this to see if the emotion would fade and the feeling would pass but it has not. Basically it's just the golden rule, if something were to happen to me in combat, I would want someone to do this for my sons.
I drew up a picture of what I would do if I had the time/skills to do it.
The sketch is not as clean as it could be but it gives you an idea the layout.
The top is sharpened and serrated. I envisioned the guard and bolster in nickel and the pins getting gradually large as they move toward the back with the lanyard hole being the largest of all in the rear. A handle of tan micarta would be fitting for a tactical knife considering the environment that Art was fighting in. I would etch Team Sergeant on the blade with "MSG Lilley 1972-2007", of course the photo of him in the prone shooting the .50cal. would be awesome but maybe unrealistic. I would also be interested in purchasing a knife like this if it is not too expensive.
If this goes down, I would be more than happy to post a picture of the presentation.
Please give me feedback, or ask any questions you might have.
Thanks for your time-
Jason
