I usually go from 600 grit paper straight to the loaded strop. Works for me.
Push cutting phone book paper, and also hair jumping are some good marks for a decent edge.
If you have to use any pressure at all to get hair to shave, it is not sharp enough for me. When I get my edge where I want it, the hair will actually jump off, like it is shooting off. With no pressure at all.
The next step is tree topping. Where you can cut the hair without even touching your skin. I don't normally go this far (have, but don't normally).
Then you have hair whittling sharp. Where you can actually take a longer piece of hair, and shave it into curls.
