I am not saying I would survive. I guarantee my wife and daughter will be helped first and I won't feel guilty about it. I have a strong instinct to help others despite the personal risks. I cannot personally stand by and not help. That's just not me. Apparently some people can. One of the stories my mom always told was of a woman who drove off a road into a lake. She managed to climb out onto her sinking vehicle crying that she could not swim, Despite there being a large crowd of onlookers, no one moved to help and she went down with the car. Crowd dynamics can suck. If one person had moved they all would have. She would have lived and perhaps my mom would have told a different story.
Ability to assess the situation quickly, accept the risks and willingness to act is key in emergencies. If there are trained pros there, I will stay out of their well practiced way. Unless I think they are being stupid... and I have seen some stupidity.
