common misconceptions that bother you?

He's also brought those damn logs you put in your fire place and put them on the camp fire making it totally useless to cook on.

Hey...sometimes they come in handy. Especially when there is no wood where you are. Like atop Weavers Needle.

My big peeve is: BRAND A knife is the best knife in the world.

Criticism of BRAND A knife is not allowed and will earn you a public flogging from BRAND A fanboys.

I can't afford the equipment to go to the woods.

I can feel my blood pressure go up as the words are being spoken. :)

This one is specific to certain areas, but I hear it ALL THE TIME:

Aren't you worried about bears up there?

Watch out for the bears!

Not necessarily a misconception outright, but the misconception behind these is that bears are everywhere and out to get you. It really grates on my ears when I hear this. Not that I don't prepare for the potential presence of bears, but people seem to think that bears just sit along the trail waiting to eat juicy hikers all day.

I'm not against them, but when I'm starting a fire for the sole reason of cooking over it, they are not welcome. If a true survival situation anything goes, but IMHO I don't want it if I can help it.

That I would carry a knife or gun because I'm "expecting trouble". If I was "expecting trouble" I wouldn't "be here". Mac

I could not agree with this more. I've personally heard these comments before. "What... are you going to kill someone?" UGH... Don't effin ask to use it later when you need it..

I always get a kick out of the neon sheeple down at my local backpacking store.
"You don't need a knife in the woods, why do you need a knife. All they are are worthless weight, I have scissors."
All this while I was showing one of them my feathery s90v military.

These people are ridiculous; no psk, no knife, reliant on heavy gas stoves, weak gear, and most important no skills.

The one I hear all the time from friends, family, and coworkers: "Why do you even carry a knife?"

[X] is the way I do it [equipment I use], and that's the only right way.

Cutting my toothbrush in half saves appreciable weight.

People who carry hatchets/machetes/kukris are going out to chop down every tree they see.

People that seem to think if they take a down sleeping bag into the woods it's going to get soaked and be worthless even though the previous 482 times they were in the woods they never got their synthetic bag wet.

All Bull terriers are killers.....sure ya could get a nasty whiplash from Maisy's tail when you try and stroke her !!!!

I once had a woman I did not even know ask to borrow my pocket knife. I asked how she knew I had a knife. She said all guys carry a knife.

5] The diuretic property of coffee exceeding its moisture content.

Actually it is the caffine that has the potential to get you in trouble. My EMT buddy could explain this better. Caffine is a vaso(sp?) constictor that decresses the circulation in the extremities. In the very cold conditions this can contribute to frostbite due to poor circulation and the inability of warm blood to get to fingers and toes. I don't know what effect it would have in hot temps but it would be logical that heat exshustion would be more likely as the ability to circulate blood to more areas of the body and to shed heat through perspiration would be compromised.

I guess I have several pet peaves.

Lack of preparedness by the general public.

The whole domesticfication of the outdoors (can you say espresso maker for backpackers) and the resulting extension of liberal politics to it.

Survival instructors that teach dangerously faulty concepts and/or ideas. Went to a free 2-3 hr class once and boy was this guy a crackpot. Long story.

Man vs Wild. I've had to spend a lot of time correcting misconceptions as people who know that I'n involved in SAR ask me about him alot. (I really hate that guy and I refuse to watch his show - although I should just so I know what crap he is telling people)

Funny! Well not most of my coworkers. They think the box cutters are knives. And I took out my SAK and one of them backed up! I asked him what the heck he was doing and he said he didn't want me to accidentally cut him. Doofus...

Goretex is breathable !!! Has anyone who believes this actually tried wearing the stuff at any other time than a quick fitting in an air conditioned outdoor store ?

Tell me about it!

I hated working at places like REI and EMS and trying to explain to them that Gore Tex is the most overhyped product on the market. They didn't want to hear that.

And when I was working in Tempe, AZ people still wanted Gore Tex boots. Hello!.....idiot...we get less than 9 inches of rain a year!

aaaaaah yes the Mountain Equipment Yuppie co-Op crowd! we have hundreds of thousands of those bear baits in Canada....they sure love preaching about how eco they are (while using gaz stoves and buying new jackets every year).

I like MEC, I like it alot. Doesn't have great cutlery, but it has good of just about everything else. Yes, you can get by with military surplus. But Bushman, you are as CDN as I am, and you also know that for most of us, CDN tire is the only alternative to by outdoor equipment. So would I prefer having a store that markets products like Sierra designs and Northface, Zamberlain and excellent cheaper propriority MEC brands over mastercraft and Coleman? Yep I love those MEC guys! Did they ban nalgene products ahead of the curve - yep - I still love those guys. Why - 'cause nalgene now is producing great stainless products.

Sorry - just don't agree with this one being up here. People buying good equipment and getting psyched about being in the outdoors. That is a good thing in my books. Even if they look silly in their matching high tech nylon. Hell, its not like they have a firesteel with a handle that matches their knife or anything :)

From one of the MEC - geeks.....

True, perhaps i came off as a little harsh. i'll explain it another time. EDIT, maybe Ontario is different than vancouver, you have to see it to understand why i get venomous.

btw, check out DEAKIN Equipment, 3 Vets, SIR or R.A.E.M.s for outfitting.

I will look at them Bushman - thanks. I know SIR was bought out by Cabelas, but I'm not familiar with the other two. Thanks for the headsup.
