common misconceptions that bother you?

I am glad to use the word sheeple when it's toward the right people, such as the fools who twist their heads around to look at your belt knives or guns with a look of mixed horror/bewilderment.

I think that's the only time I use the word sheeple as well. Usually for me it's in reference to people who automatically brand you as dangerous simply because you carry a knife. I tend to stay away from using it in a overtly political context.

RE: sheeple.

It's funny, I was thinking about this at work last night, and was going to start a thread about it.

I don't consider ignorant people to be sheeple. (There's another misconception: the "ignorant" is a pejorative term. It's not, it simply means a lack of knowledge. We're born ignorant of everything and no matter how much we learn, we're still ignorant of most things.) I don't consider stupid (unwise) or unintelligent people sheeple. Those are mostly inherent traits that they can't do anything about.

No, how I define sheeple is someone who, having the ionformation, being smart and intelligent enough to process it choose to ignore it in favor of their opinion. Let me use the example of hunting.

Me: Want to go hunting?
Them: No, I think it's bad for the animals.
Me: You know that more starve and die in competition if they are not hunted than if they are, right?
Them: No, I didn't
Me: Want to go hunting?
Them: Sure.

Me: Want to go hunting?
Them: No, I think it's bad for the animals.
Me: You know that more starve and die in competition if they are not hunted than if they are, right?
Them: No, I didn't
Me: Want to go hunting?
Them: No, I don't think I can bring myself to kill an animal.

Them: No, I didn't

Them: No, I didn't
Me: Want to go hunting?
Them: No, I don't know how.
Me: Want to learn. . .

Those are examples of those classified as "not sheeple", even if I disagree with their conclusion.

Me: Want to go hunting?
Them: No, I think it's bad for the animals.
Me: You know that more starve and die in competition if they are not hunted than if they are, right?
Them: No, I didn't
Me: Want to go hunting?
Them: No, it's bad for the animals.
Me: Didn't we just establish that it was good for them?
Them: Yes.
Me: And you agreed?
Them: Yes.
Me: So, want to go hunting?
Them: No, it's bad for the animals.

Sheeple. Not because they disagree with my conclusions, but because they can look at the facts, process them, and revert to an irrational decision based on emotion or loyalty to a cause/person/philosophy. In my examples, I gave , there are people who can look at the facts, and come to a rational conclusion that disagrees with mine. OK, we'll just disagree.

So, this whole diatribe is to agree with others that sheeple are sheeple because they refuse to think.

It is definitely bad for the animal. You know the one you are hunting. It is bad for them. No doubt about it. Their life would be so much easier if you weren't hunting it. Yep, it is bad for the animal.:D:D:D

(I just violated the don't drink and post rule.....sorry).....

Good thing nobody gets kicked out for that - it would be pretty lonely in here for me.

Wait a minute, I'd be gone too. :o

These fools would be happy to live in a nanny state where absolutely no harm can come to them.
Snobby word or not, I can call them a sheeple and forget about them, but what kind of judgement are they making about me? I am a serial killer with a torture chamber in my basement to them.
That's my quasi political rant for the day.

AMEN!!!

BTW, when I think of sheeple's, I think of the people that will be takin one for the team and making it easier for me to get away when the world goes to shit. :D

I find that I cannot stand people who are offended by my preparedness. I've met a few outdoor types that fall into this category. I consider sheeple to be anyone who, by their own logic refuses to prepare, because they refuse to believe that they may have anything bad befall them that someone else cannot solve for them. this includes people who believe that changing a tire is a technically difficult skill, as so refuse to learn how because "thats what tow trucks are for." Or generally anyone who refuses to learn a non-specialized skill, with an excuse not related to physical disability, or access to said training. I have also yet to meet anyone slowed down by a "learning disability" who did not want to be, but that is a different rant

thats why i hike alone (oooh that would make a good thread!) I refuse to hike with people who are not physically, mentally, skills & gear prepared or who choose not to be. .

I'll add something now that I read portions of the Bear Grylls thread...

People assume that folks in the Military automatically have survival skills. Not true. The military exists to kill people and break things when foreign policy fails. Whittling fuzz sticks isn't a big part of it.
