common misconceptions that bother you?

Never noodled for catfish in Missouri or Louisiana, have you?
Catfish don't bite in a traditional way, they clamp down and spin. That grinds your hide off via zillions of tiny abrasive teeth...sorta like feeding your knuckles into an 80 grit belt sander.
Been there, done that.
Edit to clarify: The cats I refer to above weighed 20-50 lbs, not the little guys. Watch out for getting 'finned' tho'. :)

I'd just like to second that comment about the cats in Missouri. My cousin took me noodlin down south when I was 14. They sunk oil drums in the river that had the bottoms cut out of them. He told me to walk out and stick my arm in the drum and wait. When the sucker clamped on he pulled me under water. I didn't want to hold on but the bastard wouldn't let go! I barely made it to the edge of the river. I still have the scars on my hand.

not to mention, alot of us are very active in trail maintnance, and building.

You aren't by chance a member of GORC are you (Gateway Off Road Cyclists)? I've ridden with a bunch of those guys. The best hiking/biking trails in Missouri are either built or maintained by those guys.

the misconception that any salt intake is bad for you. i've watched a few of my friends end up in hospital after cutting out ALL salt intake.

Salt = Life

Here's a big one for me. The folks that know you like to be prepared ...and make remarks about you must WANT the SHTF. Example: I had a guy on another forum ask if I wanted civilization to collapse so I could show off my skills and gear and be the King of the Hill for a while. This was on a survival forum too boot.

In regard to using the sun to determine direction; I have always found the sun reliable--it is always up! Obvously I have absolutely no knowledge of these matters.

the misconception that you must always go into the woods with two or more people, solo is dangerous.

the misconception that a 2wd truck cant go offroad.

That thickness = toughness.

Or stainless steel can not be used in fixed blades.

Or if you don't have gear that costs $1,000 you will die.

A very common misconception; my Pitbulls are ferocious, child eating beasts. All my dogs are very gentle and reliable pets. They are totally reliable with kids and even other dogs.

The media has done this breed and mixed breeds thereof, a complete disservice. This breed, if properly socialized and trained makes an excellent and reliable pet. I take them camping and hiking all the time and they are happy to meet anyone that comes down the trail or into my yard.

Someone asks me what kind of dogs I have and after telling them American Pitbull I always get this screwed up face and reply "oh they are so dangerous"

Unfortunately those who abuse dogs for the ugly competition of dog fighting have created this notorious reputation. They have intentionally made these fine dogs vicious. With that said, many of these rescued dogs go on to be wonderful family pets. Sadly, some do not tho.

As this is a knife forum, my dog Cracker carries a Scandi knife when camping.

Biggest misconception: the word "sheeple" has any objective meaning. Basically, it's a snobby word used to describe someone who doesn't think like you do.

I hate threads like these. Once some real misconceptions are hashed out, it becomes a sanctimonious bitch and moan session about folks who don't share our hobby.

True, I tend to think that "sheeple" is the male equivalent of "skank." I was once driving the girlfriend of an old friend anywhere, and she pointed out a girl driving in another car. "Skank," she said.

"What do you mean?" I asked. "Do you know her?"

"No, she just looks like a skank," she said.

"What do you even mean by that?" I asked.

She paused for a bit and then said (surprisingly I thought) "It means I think she's better looking than me."

Usually when guys start talking about "the sheeple" I just make a mental note to ignore them in the future.

And I am a pretty hard-core survivalist myself, and a many-gun-owner, in CANADA, to boot. I understand the issues. But talking about "sheeple" and "non-sheeple" is usually just code for "agrees with me/has the same priorities I do" and "doesn't agree with me/has different priorities than I do."

Great couple of posts. I've never looked at it that way...makes me realize how thoughtlessly I've used that word in the past.

Yes but we all love to do it here because this is a group of like minded people who share a commonality of values and we are after all just wringing our fists at the sky wondering why our community is as small as it is.

The REAL misconception probably lies in what my perception of sheeple is relative to others. Still, when you shake your head in agreement with whatever little rant I have at the fellow dorks that I encounter in my world - we both share a moment of friendship.

I don't think it is hate propaganda to use the word sheeple. It is just a statement to effect that what we see as important is undervalued in others. Besides, the term really resonates with Pink Floyd's Animals album - so I really like it. Of course I affiliate myself with the dogs and pigs are 'THE MAN'. ;););) My wife and I have another saying we frequently quote: 'Management coming down to bite you in the ass'. Happens a lot.

If you don't think we like to bitch and moan - do a post count on this thread!

I not only use the word sheeple quite a bit, I think it's very descriptive. To me it means people who let others do their thinking for them. Rather then do their own research and come to a decision they believe what they're told.

AMEN!

I use Sheeple to refer to the liberal minded, anti knife, anti hunting, eco nazi, city dwelling yuppie scum that call the police or rangers when they see a hiker (like myself) out in the woods wearing a blade or practicing survival skills. I feel i am FULLY JUSTIFIED in using such a word to refer to such dingbats. I invite anyone who dislikes the word Sheeple to come to vancouver and see how bad it is here, perhaps then you will understand why i use the word sheeple.

my 2 cents.

Well, if "sheeple" just means "people who let others think for them" (something we're probably all guilty of in some way anyway) then I agree, it's descriptive and negative.

But I tend to hear in in this context:

"The sheeple are going to vote for party X again. Why won't they wake up and vote the way I do?"

Or,

"Once again, the sheeple have enacted a policy that benefits them. When will they start writing policy I like?"

It happens that I like guns and oppose gun control, for instance. But I do understand that there is more than one way to look at a situation and if someone doesn't agree with me, I don't necessarily conclude that the problem is that they have let someone else do the thinking for them. Often it's that the research that's out there hasn't clearly answered the question, and the results are open to interpretation. I know what I think, and I believe it's right. But I accept the possibility that other people have also looked at the data, and come to a different conclusion, and believe that's right. That doesn't make them sheep, it makes them someone who doesn't agree with me.

I have a few friends who disagree with my politics totally, and who are smart, analytical, well-educated and understand the issues every bit as well as I do. I often hear them described as "sheeple" by others that I know...

I don't object to the term "sheeple" per se, I object to its frequent application to people who aren't letting others think for them, they're just people with different ideas and priorities than I have.

Well I do agree with misanthropist - that I try to keep a persons political affiliation from stereotypes. That is one reason why WS&S is a place I frequent more than other sub-forums around here.

So Siguy - have you created a frankenstein with this thread????

Not really a pet peeve, but it always makes me chuckle when I see someone with decked out in new gear and they have 100 of those multi colored .99cent carabiners clipped all over their backpack starps. These same folks usually also have one of those $7.99 75ft purple/yellow ropes from Harbor Freight slung accross them.....Kinda scary if you think about it.

I am glad to use the word sheeple when it's toward the right people, such as the fools who twist their heads around to look at your belt knives or guns with a look of mixed horror/bewilderment.
These fools would be happy to live in a nanny state where absolutely no harm can come to them.
Snobby word or not, I can call them a sheeple and forget about them, but what kind of judgement are they making about me? I am a serial killer with a torture chamber in my basement to them.
That's my quasi political rant for the day.
