Company Store: Factory Seconds?

I just received my first Busse: a Game Warden from the company store.

The tip hasn't been properly ground, and it even shows a noticeable bit of crinkle coating on the very tip.

I'm guessing I could "just" send it back, which would entail no end of re-export/re-import paperwork (or just pay another 60 $ customs charge), 40 $ shipping, and a month (by which time hunting season will be over).

So -- is the company store selling factory seconds, or what? Doesn't look like the huge orange "Inspected By____" sticker counts for much. I'm more than just a little disappointed. I emailed the store, but considering they never answered my last mail, I'm not overly hopeful.

Busse sells no 'seconds'. What you have is a rare Painted Tip Warden. ;)

Would love to see some pics of this one. I'm not sure why the extra bit of crinkle coat offends if it's going to be a user hunting knife. I am more curious about the tip grind.

Contact the Shop. I'm sure that Busse will take care of you. However, given customs and time and monetary considerations, sounds like the easier "fix" would be to reprofile the edge, including the tip.

Guess I was a little unclear, then: the crinkle coat -- at least something black and dull -- is right where the sharp tip should have been.

So are you saying that the tip is missing and that it is simply "filled" with crinkle coat?

most of what I get from the BCS looks better than what I get from the Busse.

so no they don't sell seconds. I've never had a problem with a BCS knife.

Not all Busse's, or any other knive will be perfect evertime.

Email skunk again, he may not have got the first one. He usually gets back pretty fast. If he has one like it I'm sure he will swap, if not Busse will make it right at no charge.
I promise they will fix you up and prob pay for your shipping it back. You prolly won't have it by the start of hunting season though.

Good Luck!

Yeah, a small piece of the very tip has not been ground sharp, and looks to have crinkle coat on it (it's dark and dull).

It's not entirely impossible for me to reprofile the tip, but considering the edge angle and my honing skills it's going to take a whole lot of time and leave a questionable result.

I know accidents happen, but I just expected a little better quality control, is all.

sound like a slightly burnt tip, I just got back an AD that had the same thing.
They had it fixed in a couple of weeks. Mine was an 2007SE for collection, If not I would'nt have worried about it. Garth said it would only affect the looks.

edit- I'm not really sure after reading your above post??? Is any one with sharpeing skills in your area? They might could fix you up real easy.
Also send a pic to Busse and see what they say.

My problem is that shipping it back entails taking an hour off work (lost income) to go to the post office (since in this socialist country, the post office closes almost before it opens -- I really need to move to a real country) to fill out extensive export/re-import paperwork, unless I want to pay taxes one more time (which is another 60 US$).

You prolly won't have it by the start of hunting season though.
Heh, yeah, most likely, since it opens tomorrow. I have time to regrind the tip OR throw together a quick sheath, but not both. :)

I think you're describing a different problem -- my tip isn't even remotely sharp and that definitely affects its function.

kevral, we have not received your email. busse combat does not sell seconds to anybody. please send it back, to either the busse company store or to busse combat. we will make it right.

It's possible that this is a grind issue. I received a muddy CGFBM from the BCS a few months back that had a damaged tip. I couldn't really tell what it was until I looked at it under a loupe (magnifier). Turns out it was a damaged tip that would be virtually impossible to file or strop out. I contacted Skunk at the BCS. They said that they would contact the shop and inform them that I would be sending it back for repair. They reground the tip and send it back pretty quick, better than new. Service with BCS and the shop have always been top notch. I find it VERY odd that Skunk has not gotten back to you. Maybe he's away. I wouldn't be surprised if he chimed in here. I attached a pic of the tip damage just for reference. LIKE I SAID, SKUNK WILL CHIME IN. He's top notch.
Also with the large number of knives that come out of the shop each day I'm not surprised if some with damage slip through the cracks. That said I would be disappointed as you are, especially being an overseas customer. However, I guarantee that Busse will make it right.

Out of all the Busse knives I own, I have only seen one with the tip not fully sharpened. And yes the coating was also still on there. But I am talking about 1/32 of an inch near the tip. That is never a big deal for me because I tend to resharpen all of my knives anyway.

Just sharpen it up and you should be fine. You can always send it back to have it resharpened or replaced but why go through the hassle?

Eventually you are going to need to resharpen your own knives. Why not invest in some time to learn to sharpen properly. Part of the fun in owning great knives is sharpening them to become scary sharp.

Yes, your problem sound worse than mine did.

I know it will be a hastle and $ for you to send it back. One option would be to find a knifemaker or someone with grinding skill to fix it. Sounds like it could be fixed pretty easy. Is there any near you?

Sorry I'm not much help:o
Hope you get it worked out:thumbup:

scott.

I'm suddenly wondering about that mail -- you wouldn't happen to have a spam filter that catches onto the word "investment", would you? It's part of my perfectly legitimate norwegian mail address.

Either way, I'm very happy you're offering to take care of the problem. I just need to figure out if it's worth the hassle for me, or if I should try to regrind it myself.

take some pics even with the cheap camera I would really like to see the tip

Maybe pick up a Puuko for hunting season and deal with the Busse when time permits?

Sorry for your difficulties.

It sounds like it might be left over buffing compound from the final stropping of the edge. . . Take a little WD-40 to it and see if it doesn't just come right off. . . . If not, send it back after hunting season and we'll make it right. . . We'll also cover your shipping and handling fees. . .

Thanks,

Jerry
