I'm still new to the knife world, and own 5 knives not including my leatherman multitool, but own 1 modern. Do you own alot of modern knives also or do you prefer traditionals alot more?

This thread will probably get moved, but I'll play.

My ratio of traditionals to moderns is about 10 to 1.

With 300+ knives I have a diverse collection dating from mid 1800 to current modern styles, with that in mind I generally carry two traditionals and two more modern folders...

I have way more Traditionals, but have a few moderns for times like, say, when I am on a ladder working and desire a certain level of ease of access and ease of function while still holding on ;)

I'm fairly new to traditionals, so my collection of them is sparse. I have well over 100 modern knives and about 18 traditional knives. Finding GEC has turned my focus 180 deg. In the future I doubt that I will be buying many modern knives - a few, of course - but expect to concentrate on traditional knives now.

My collection is roughly...68.4% traditional and the rest either modern folders or modern fixed blades. That is a rough guess.

I've sold off/gave away most of my traditionals in the past three years and only have about 20 now, so I have more moderns now for the first time in my life.
I couldn't open most of my traditionals after injuring my thumb three years ago or I would still have more traditionals.

I only have about five moderns including fixed blades. I don't consider my custom fixed blades modern because they are bushcraft based designs.

i guess it depends on what you use the knife for or maybe you just prefer the look and feel of a traditional or vice versa. i just wonder sometimes, are traditionals a much simpler road to take and less moveable parts compared to a modern folding knife, and just less things to go wrong.

At the moment im sitting on about 30 modern and 1 traditional. But im new to the traditional scene and im sure this will change quickly. This is a side of knives i know little about but am really finding my self liking more and more!!!

I have a few modern knives, less than 8 that are left over from when I used to carry them. I have probably close to 100 traditional folder if you count Swiss Army knives. I no longer carry or use modern folders at all, the few I have are either too cheap to bother selling off or a couple of my favorites that remain for the memories.

I used to carry two knives at a time, either two modern one handed that changed weekly, or one modern and a Swiss Army knife for the tools, though the SAK saw most of the use.
Now I am down to carrying one knife at a time, I try to carry knives that will age and show character with use, it helps keep the SAKs out of my pocket so I can enjoy my classics.
I hope to have a small collection of knives that I carried on a regular basic to pass on to my son that he can remember me by as I have with my father and grandfather.

I have found that I enjoy the character of the traditional knives and the way carbon steel sharpens and patinas. They also it much better and are easier to use in public.

Right now I have about a 4:1 ratio in favor of traditionals. For a long time I had only modern. Finally hit me that all my folders had black scales/handles.

I have WAY more modern only 5 traditional. I really wanted to love traditional knives but for some reason I feel the need to: grab, open, cut and close and I want it fast. Some of the time, when I need a knife, I have only one hand free.

Only 3 modern knives left, 4 including a plier-type multitool. I keep the one-handers around for those very rare instances in which I would require the combination of OHO and a strong lock. For the other 99% of cutting tasks and worry stone duty, give me thin carbon steel and natural materials any day.

Modern folders- my favorites
Traditional folders- a modicum of appeal compared to moderns
Custom bushcraft fixed blades- "now that's a knife"

I prefer ipads to Radio Shack TSR-80's

I was gifted a Buck Metro... it being a 1" bladed modern keychain knife. It's all I ever carry, all tasks I've needed done, it has done for me. BUT, as for my collecting, It's all about the traditional... nolstalgia gets the best of me with things like that :-)

I've never been a collector. The knives I have typically had in the past are generally fixed blades for outdoors type tasks. I have 6 or 7 of these including a couple USMC type K-Bars and a couple Beckers. These are for use around my little ranch property and perform their tasks well for severe duty applications. I have 2 clip-type modern folders that are simply utilitarian for use at work - I have no attachment to them at all, they're simply tools. I have one Buck 110-type folder made by Craftsman in a pouch that I've had since the mid-80's. I have one Leatherman that I've carried on my belt full-time for nearly 20 yrs. These are all tools, evoking no special admiration or affection.

Nowadays however, since discovering the beautiful GEC's I've fallen in love with traditionals. They are now my passion and stir much interest. I currently have 7 traditional GEC's. I carry/use a #06 and #55 every waking moment and most recently a #85 has now slipped into the mix. These three are beautiful examples of the cutler's art and I'm proud to own and carry them. The other four? They get some use and are carried less often, but they're not EDC's.

So at this point I guess it's about 50/50 traditional/modern. But the modern knives carry no special appeal to me and half of them I'm not even sure where they are at the moment (in the garage someplace? Only the Beckers get any regular use). The traditionals are most definitely my babies... :)
