Comparing two recently arrived jacks: Schrade Walden 236 and Northfield 66

I take that last statement back. It appears the pen blade was stressed. I just opened it to see if it was straight, and it snapped right in two.

oh man! I am so sorry
i would be heartbroken if that were me!

definitely get it replaced if possible, i am not sure how you could make that a screwdriver, it broke before the thumb nick so how would you ever open it again?
I hope it works out for you!

Grind in a new nick if the blade doesn't sit too low (which it might).
roland

I think it would sit too low. I looked back, and this first picture taken when all three knives Paul traded me arrived is the only one I have of the 236 with both blades closed.

Thanks Roland, for the info. about Herman Williams.

Herman Williams who was the Schrade person for custom type work is still working on Schrades now in his home workshop.
I'm sure he would put a replacement blade in for you and even change out the Delrin handles for Peachseed bone ones.
It would be all real Schrade work.

I could replace the pen blade in your 236 Schrade Walden if I was in a location where I had the facilities to work on knives. I live in Kingsland, Georgia in the winter months and wil not be back in North Carolina until April 2013. I do not have a shop in Georgia. The stag and peachseed bone I have rehandled seen on ebay is the ones I have done the previous summer. Sorry I cannot help you at this time.

Just a bit of information on straightening a crooked blade. If it is bent from the tang, securely clamp it in a vice as close as possible to the tang. Then gently pull the bend out of the blade. This generally works. At least you break less blades. Herman

Thanks Herman, for commenting here, and replying to my email. I have sent you an email response.

Very kind of you to reply, thank you.

Ouch! What a sad sight. When you messaged me this morning I had no idea... :( I hope you can get a new pen blade for the 236.

The Schrade will be reborn!, I am sure of that.

The GEC 66 in Rotten Banana is my favorite, however the 2012 has supplanted it....

I think it is a honor for all of us that Mr. Williams posted here. Herman worked many years for Imperial Schrade and i do believe he was one of the top (if not the top) cutlers, and did much of their speciality work.
Schrade USA was sold off in 2004, but the spirit and workmanship lives on, now in North Carolina, rather than Ellenville.
Any Schrade worked on by Mr. Williams is still 100% Schrade.

Totally agree Roland---I am very fortunate to have one of his beautiful pieces!!!
