Compasses

Scott,

You cannot go wrong with the Cammenga. It is the standard by which all others are judged. If you had not spent that money, a Silva or a Bruton base plate would be great as well.

I have some expensive compasses, like the brunton eclipse. leave them home now; the $12 silvas I get at walmart have been just as reliable if not more so. thats what I use all the time now. I have a backup on my watch, and at least one other button compass somewhere, like a zipper pull.

I usually take a cheap Suunto A-10 as my backup, and the M-3 as my "go to". The $70 Cammenga stays home.

I don't get all the praise on the Cammenga. Its well built, and used correctly its quite accurate. But theres so much to using it. I'd rather keep it simple. The clear baseplate compass is all you need. I take it and a map.

When I use the Cammenga I take a map, ruler, and a protractor. Not to mention I have to do the declination adjustments (not too tough, just would rather not have to deal with it), and its heavy.
