composite blades

Ya the Volt has a D2 spine and M390 cutting edge, I could have been happy with all M390.
The look is awesome though.

I love Kershaw's CBs, all I have right now are a Leek, Tyrade, and a 350 that should be here today. I think a Shallot is next on my CB list, unless I can find an SG2 Blur....

If you can find one, its a flipping razor blade!! I also have the SG2 JYD and they are some of the sharpest knives I have.

I have the composite leek, and I think it's killer.
From all the pictures I see, however, the D2 is much darker than the Sanvik. On my blade they're identical in color. Is that due to a mild patina forming on the D2? I was tempted to let some citrus coat the blade for a while and see what happens but then I chickened out.

I have a CB Leek too, and I was curious for awhile about how the D2 looked so much darker in the pictures. My blade looks like yours does, pretty much the same. Then I noticed one day if you hold it at just the right angle, you can see how much darker the D2 is. It's really in the angle of the pictures I guess.

Here's a shot of all the CB goodness that I have. The only ones I don't use are the ZT & Speedform, but that's what my Speedform II's are for :)

Thomas just posted this pic of an unfinished 560CB on another forum.
Gonna be epic.

Hey, Tony. I have two of the CB leeks. One has the D2 significantly darker than the other. The dark one is a blem, and I just figured out that the blem is a too short blade, so I don't think the color had anything to do with it being marked as a blem. I got the blem first, by about a year or so before I got the other one, so perhaps the D2 on earlier runs was etched or patinaed, though I can't be certain which one is earlier production. I would really like to know the reason behind the change.

For what it's worth; I prefer the higher contrast, darker D2 edge.

Thanks, loggin on. The topic intrigues me.

ADD: Just got back. Nice thread, good seeing TW posting. Wow, it's coming along nicely. I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I can't secure one down the road.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but JYD II SG2 is actually not a composite blade. It's a 410 and SG2 steel laminate.

Top one is sg2 and bottom is composite d2 just for clarification purposes!

I think the older d2 had more of a acid etch look to it. The new d2 is a different variant and is lighter in color on the finnished piece. I can't recall where I seen this but I'm putting it out there anyway!

I like the D-2 being darker. I did a forced patina on my Rake with Radio Shack PCB Etchant cut 50/50 with water, and I love the results. It's all personal preference, I guess.
