Yeah, that was my uncle's hunt club. They put up gates to stop the four-wheeler folks from riding through and spooking the game. The four-wheeler folks started Supergluing the locks out of spite. So one of the hunters set up near a gate and waited. Sure enough, here came a four-wheeler dude about mid-morning. While 4W dude was down fiddling with the lock, the hunter put a shot a few feet to one side of him. Four-wheeler dude did a backflip, got on his mo-sheen, and skidaddled. No more locks were Superglued.

I have had success by waiting for the trespassers.

Approaching silently.

Saying a kind hello.

And explaining, in a calm tone, precisely what I will do if I ever see them on my land again.

I've done this twice in the past 10 years. For whatever reason, I have no repeat trepassers.:)

I agree this is a better way, and I don't condone shooting in folks' directions.

I think the hurdle to a "conversation" was that the hunters could never catch the 4-wheeler folks over on the land in the first place.

By the time they'd climb down from a tree, the 4-wheeler would be long gone.

The hunters only suspected who was Supergluing locks, but as it turns out, they were right.

I agree, as a miscreant youth back in the day I have trespassed unknowingly on several occasions and had everything from rocksalt and dogs to a very startling quiet "hellow". We never did go back to that property without permission and have helped keep people out for the owner (really good guy).

I would never say the hunters acted wrongly.

Every situation is different.

The quiet approach just usually works for me. I'm a very sincere person and I guess that comes across. No threats ... just the facts.

And like M21 to Lông Trắng...It is a part of my vulgar Southern Vernacular, though if it offends you, I will curb it a bit....My apologies sir.

OP
Thank you for telling me about Dave.
Sounds like he did indeed have an enormous heart
as it is still beating in the memory of his many friends.

One of these days, I'll drop a token of my esteem off at his last known residence. He's not there, but it will make me feel a bit better.:)

I think you have accomplished this by remembering him out loud.
He heard you and Im sure is smiling.
"Hi Dave! Nice to meet you!"
