TRAGEDY — Sheriff Daniel Edwards speaks during a press conference about the home invasion on South Baptist Road.
The home invasion that led to the murder of a 68-year-old woman and the wounding of her husband, was no random incident, Sheriff Daniel Edwards said Monday.

Edwards said the invaders were looking for the couple’s son, who was in jail at the time.

Grace Lamonte, 68, was killed in the shooting early Sunday at 44055 S. Baptist Road, Hammond.

Her husband, Anthony Lamonte, 72, who was also shot, was listed in stable condition Monday afternoon at a New Orleans area hospital and was improving, Edwards said.

Two suspects are in custody and a third unidentified man is being sought, the sheriff said Monday.

Edwards called the incident a “horrible tragedy” and emphasized that it was not a random crime.

“They went looking for someone they thought would be there,” the sheriff said, referring to John Lamonte, the couple’s 45-year-old son.

John Lamonte was not involved with the actual murder, Edwards said, but he has a lengthy arrest record and is a drug user.

The motive for the home invasion and shooting is unknown at this time, Edwards said Monday.

“We’re trying to uncover the exact motive, but John Lamonte may know,” Edwards said.

At the time of the shooting, John Lamonte was under arrest on four warrants for failure to appear and one warrant for alleged simple burglary, Edwards said. He remains in jail.Fucker was ALREADY IN JAIL!

The sheriff’s office criminal investigations division arrested Benny Flowers, 25, at his residence, 2720 Yorktown Drive, Laplace, as an alleged principal to home invasion.

Edwards said later Monday that Jarris Darnell Monroe, 23, of 4106 E. Club Drive, St. Rose, had turned himself in at the sheriff’s office about 3:50 p.m. Monroe was booked for alleged home invasion, first degree homicide and attempted first degree homicide.

Monroe’s fingerprints were found at the scene, the sheriff said.

The home invasion was reported at 1:19 a.m. Sunday, Edwards said.

Deputy John Eady and other responding deputies found the wounded Anthony Lamonte on the ground and his wife dead.

The deputies saw the window to the left of the front door had been broken as a point of entry, Edwards said. Deputy David Copeland forced the door open to get inside.

Deputies learned that three men had invaded the home and shot the victims, Edwards said.

By Sunday morning after the initial investigation, deputies had identified Flowers as a suspect. Deputies went to Flowers’ residence and made the arrest. They seized some items that Edwards declined to identify.

At a press conference Monday, the sheriff said he could not make public the name of the suspected shooter and could not publicize the caliber of the weapon and other specifics of the shooting. However, he said one weapon was used.

“Flowers was present, but I won’t say anymore,” Edwards said.

Flowers is in the Living-ston Parish Jail due to lack of space at the Tangipahoa jail, Edwards said.

The perpetrators exchanged words with the victims before the shooting, he said. Edwards said he has no reason to believe Anthony Lamonte was in possession of a weapon.

Asked about the correlation between drug use and aggravated burglaries, Edwards said drugs play some role in most home invasions.

Threna Bailey of Hammond, who lived across the road from the Lamontes until several months ago, described the couple as “good people you just can’t say anything bad about.

“I’m so outdone about this,” she said Monday. “It’s terrible.”
