Here's a few pics of my second Conan Sword, made of 5160.

1. First I got the inscription CNC'd on the blank material (3.5" wide .25" thick)

2. Then I cut the profile:

3. Here's a pic of the rough grind stage (36 grit Blaze belts). The edge bevel is 8" radius and the fuller radius is 4". I used my tool rest jig for the edge grinds (you can see where the jig doesn't let me do the entire edge...the bottom 3 inches above the ricasso will be done free hand) and the fuller was done free hand:

4. After the 36 grit, I hit it with 120, then the trizact A65 (220), then the scotch brite Medium belt (Maroon). Then off to Pacmet for heat treat.

5. The waxes for the bronze investment castings are at the foundry. These pics show a little frost on the wax (i kept it in my freezer to make it easier to handle when it was warm out):

Can't wait to get the parts back so I can finish!

Hey SavageSword,

that is AWESOME :-o

congrats to your very fine craftsmanship. Can't wait to see more pic on the progress of your sword.

I got an Albion Atlantean (but i keep it unsharpened, jus as collectors sword ... won#t use it for bottle cutting or such).

Best wishes
Vincent

Thanks Vincent!! I wanted the albion version 10 years ago...but could never afford it...you're a lucky man! It was that crazy obsession for those swords that started me down the path of learning sword smithing. 10 years later, I'm making my own with a true hollow grind (my first one was a flat grind).

If I'm honest, that snow quenching scene in Conan is what really made me want to make blades. Can't wait to see this finished, having seen your other work on here, you won't disappoint.

aarongb: Yeah, that bit of movie lore...plunging the sword in the snow is awesome!

jonnymac44: Thanks for the kind words!

I got my Castings back this week then got the patina applied, and I also received my blades from PacMet...and they are nice and straight! Bonus! I'll work the clean up and assembly soon.

Mr. You are one very fine maker !!! I hope your work is easily found and also appreciated by collectors. I wish you success in the making and in continuing to make these ! I enjoy the work you are doing ever so much !!! Frank

Thanks for the kind words!! Just to be clear, on this sword I had access to reference sculptures for the guard and pommel that I used to make the master sculpt, I did very little sculpting work on these (unlike all of my other swords).

She's finally done! Here's the pics:

Final weight: 8.5 lbs!
Point of balance at 4" above the handle.

If it were anything other than the conan sword I would say it is about 5 pounds heavier than 99% of real swords out there. However that's about what the original weighed.

Really nice work there and attention to detail

Thanks for the nice words! This sword is definitely not a historical representation, that's for sure. It's pure hollywood and fantasy. And man, is it fun to hold!

Ha maybe in a 1000 years they will dig that guy up and it will end up in a museum as a representation of what we wielded in our day:D

Great work.

I noticed one of the castings above the handle has some gap space near where it and the blade flare out. Is there any way to close that gap space?
