Conan sword #2 with Hollow Grind... WIP....

Are you kidding me!?

Savage, that turned out so damn cool. You have got some serious talent, hope to see your work progress even farther. What a wonderful job on that one!

I noticed one of the castings above the handle has some gap space near where it and the blade flare out. Is there any way to close that gap space?

That's true, the casting isn't perfectly symmetrical, so it requires a lot of custom work to get the blade to fit. I thought about trying to squeeze the castings from the outside, but I didn't want to chance messing up the profile of the castings..or damaging them. I definitely need to study the casting better to improve the fit next time.

I like the sword a lot, everything except the wrap. I think you could improve the overall look by using a leather wrap, or perhaps a leather and wire wrap. In any case, super job! Have you done any cutting tests with it yet?

JohnnyMac: thanks for nice words!

David S: one of my next projects will have a handle wrap with the wire underneath . I'm new to that technique so ill have to find some good tutorials. Any suggestions for tutorials?

I love it. That is a beautiful sword. On of these days if I'm lucky ill own a sword so nice. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I've saved some. Let me find them and I'll get back to you.

Savage, I'm sorry, but for some reason I can't upload any of the tutorials I've bookmarked. However, good tutorials are easy to google. I'm particulary fond of the leather and wire tutorial by the sword maufacturers guide. I bet when you see them you'll want to take that handle off and do it again.

ohhhhhhh sensai! How are you Michael?!! Yes, there is a bit of work involved, buy me a beer and I'll share my knowledge with ya! :-)

FYI - For everyone else, I met Michael 11 years ago via the interweb, trying to find someone to help me make my first conan blade, he graciously helped me with many emails and phone calls! As I'm sure you're all aware, he's a world class citizen! Cheers Mike!

Hi David!

I finally got my shop set up after moving this summer, and I'm back making some cool pointy things! Here's a quick list of what's on my bench:

- 2 conan swords
- 3 aluminum short swords for my girls
- 2 Custom Excaliber Sword blades for a customer
- sculpting the guards and pommels for some assorted Dungeons and Dragons inspired swords and daggers

I'll post some progress photos soon, thanks for all the interest and comments!
Busy time!

Hi Savagesword,
this might be an old thread but I joined up just to pay my respects to you and your amazing work. Anyone who hasn't seen this thread before is in for a treat and for those who have, well, the word "respect" literally means "to take another look at" so pay the man his dues and and give this work a respectful second glance.

I'd like to thank you for sharing the details of the making of these swords with us. Reading about all the obstacles that you've encountered and mastered, I feel that you have demonstrated a very Nietschean "will to power" of your own.

I have always loved the designs of the Atlantean and Father's swords from the movie but could never afford the big bucks for the Albion reproductions. I had been considering the Windlass Atlantean as I heard it had improved from the earlier renditions but if you are still making these I would dearly love some information on how to crack the "riddle of steel" and obtain one so I've sent an email to the address above, if that's okay with you.

All the best and thanks again for sharing. Truly inspirational, man!

Wow! Mr. WheelOfPain, that was such a nice note. Thanks for taking some time and writing it... it really means a lot.

I'll check my email, no worries.
