Confession of a light user

I realize now that I spend about 900% more time reading about knives than actually using them. Steel, style, locking mechanisms, brands, materials, aesthetics, quality, opinions: all this stuff I find fascinating and have accumulated a pretty nice collection of "users"--that barely get used if at all. Anyone else do this? Get more into the "academic" side of knives than in actually using them?

I'm sort of the same way.... I don't really use my users, simply because I don't have that many things to cut in my everyday life.

Same here, I enjoy collecting and the appreciate good craftsmanship, aesthetics, etc. However I work in an office environment so my users are appropriate for boxes, zip ties, fruit, paper, etc - so yeah, light use. My users have a max of about a 3" blade (mini-grip, etc) with the exception of A ZT350 which goes camping and a small balisong collection which i flip, but don't carry.

Hello, my name is Gadfly22, and I'm a light user.

Heavy buyer, avid reader, occasional poster -- but, with not much occasion to do more than slit envelopes and open boxes, a definite light user.

I usually have 3 knives with me at any given time and can go days without cutting anything. I still love to have a knife with me and would never think of going anywhere without one.

My wife gets a kick out of me when I use my knife to cut a bag of chips open(deservedly so??),yes I am a light user most of the time, but It depends also On which work crew I'm on (we rotate)

I find myself doing slot of research on knives and then buying it and not wanting rouse it cause I do t want it to get wore and tore. I also do more research on knives than I buy, but that's mostly because im18 and I'm saving for college and such and don't have money to spend on a knife all the time. But I can say I buy knives and only use a few. And there all user knives. I use my skyline mainly sometimes my rat 1 and my leatherman wave that's about it

It's true, I am a light user. My bet is there are lot more of us out there than will admit it. Oh, well.

I admit I don't use my knives nearly so much in my current job as I have in past jobs. Instead of using a knife for hours on end six days a week as I have had to do in the past, I'll typically only need to put a knife through some heavy use twice a week or so, if that. I'll also use them for the generic every day stuff like opening letters and whatnot, as well as whatever camping I find time for, but that hardly counts.

Yep, I'm a pretty light user too. I actually cut stuff all the time because I install vinyl and linoleum flooring for a living. Most of the time, I just use a fixed razor utility knife because anything else would be totally hammered at the end of one day. I do have one task specific knife that I sharpen on a regular basis, but it's worthless for edc. I still carry an Emerson at work for when I don't have my tool pouch on and it gets a work out every few days. At home, it's just letters, boxes, etc, and I usually only carry something under 3". I have at least 2 knives on me at all times though. I feel naked without them! I love looking at, reading about and collecting them too.

Not much use here. I seem to have to find uses like opening that bag of chips or mail that i could of just done with my bare hands :(

Glad I'm not the only one. For me it's a about the tactile pleasure, design, build quality, and feel of the carry. I also have a deep fascination with militaria but could never be a soldier. There's probably a parallel there.

It's not something I'm usually forthright about, since I'm very cognizant that there are people with serious jobs that use this stuff for real. I often wonder how they view dudes like me.

Same with me, I recently got interested in knives and always carry one but hardly ever use it. I buy used knives on e-Bay not just to save money but to have something to sharpen with my new Lansky sharpening kit.

I can't believe nobody uses their folders in the kitchen! :D
Although I usually use small to medium fixed blades there.

When I first got a Sebenza, the two major uses were kitchen duty and trail clearing -- walking down a local trail through the woods to the lake, I would cut back thorn bushes. Then there was the time a velociraptor leaped out from the reeds along the shore ... whooo ... good thing it was just an egret.

Yeah.

I don't use knives heavily either.

Never understood batoning. For splitting wood I use a hatchet or a froe and mallet.
