Congratulations, soldier, you've been drafted. You get to bring ONE of YOUR knives.

I'm a little old and fat for this sort of thing, but if the press gang shows up and I already have six knives on my person, do I have to drop five of them?

By the way, for killing the army issues rifles. And the army issues a lot of other things that add up, so you may or may not want to add a big heavy chopper to the load. I understand that one of the most popular "tactical" knives in the military, for problem-solving in the field, is the Leatherman Tool and its various cousins.

But that "press gang" scenario suggests that law and order and organized supply systems and leadership in general are in bad shape, so maybe I'd want something that could do heavy work, and which I could use, when out of ammo, to strike one or two good blows before I go up to find out if God is really on the side I ended up on. That BK&T Brute that came in yesterday comes to mind, but I'd probably go for a more versatile "compromise" design and take the Fällkniven A1.

The slot I don't use for a really big knife would help make room for whatever folding shovel I end up with. I will certainly want a digging tool, to put some earth between me and incoming metal, and of course for field sanitation. And the shovel can also strike a heavy blow. I think I'd make sure I had a shovel before I looked around for a "combat knife."

I thought I was not prepared for this particular contigency, but Velitrius has shown us The Way. I'm going camping with him.

My stoutest, most versatile, and most comfortable knife would have to be my 5 inch forged 1084 hunter by Jim Crowell. It is light fast, and strong. The handle ergonomics are superb. Unfortunately, the handle is made of gorgeous tiger maple which may not react well extended field use, but I don't own any synthetic handled knives. Other than that, this knife can do just about anything one might want to do with a knife (heavy chopping excluded).

I considered my forged 1075 eight inch persian fighter with Japanese style clay tempered blade made by Tim Morgan. But although it is a great kitchen knife and head lopper, its just to darn big for constant carry. And does not perform detail work very well.

So if they catch me, conscript me, and violate my right to own my own body, I'm shipping out with my Crowell Hunter.

I would take my Busse Basic #7, and I would also try and smuggle in my Gerber multi tool. I have found it to be very useful in the field. Of course, if I could smuggle in a multi tool I would try to bring some other pocket knives.

Velitrius ambushed me with his post. Thanks a lot.

Now that I've got the iced tea cleaned off of and out of my computer, I have this narrowed down to three choices:

1. CS Trailmaster
2. Fallkniven A1
3. BK&T Brute

Since my Trailmaster and A1 both have completely crappy Cordura sheaths which are not even "Fall Certified" much less "Jump Certified", I'll have to take the Brute.
Not that it really matters anyway as with my luck, I'll end up in the Marine Corps again and this time boot camp will kill my fat and unsat ass off anyway long before I become a big ol' target for enemy snipers who need more practice.

The only one I have that I know would last is my BUCK Intrepid II. Theres enough steel in it I could cut some of it off somewhere and make me a small sheath knife if I had to

As the spyderco starmate and dozier neck knife are on my person, the super tool is in my funny pack - I'd grab my new Busse #7 and head off.

I've done it before - I can do it again....

not that I'd like too...

Battle Mistress.

A knife is by default a tool, it's only a weapon when a human chooses to make it so.

Well seeing as how that MT SOCOM I ordered hasn't arrived yet, probably would have to go with my MT MA Kestrel. And maybe try to sneak a CPM 440v Native.

Still haven't picked up any fixed blades yet . . .

You mean I get to serve again?! Hooah! Wait one while I get my Battle Mistress.

I guess I'd have to take my Cold Steel San Mai Tanto. It's the biggest and probably strongest knife I own. I bought it from the Cutlery Shoppe about 10 years ago. It is a numbered piece (#471) and came with a Galco Leather made kydex sheath. For a hard use knife, I'd bet my life on it (Along with an M4 w/ some Armor Piercing Tracer Incendiary ammo

)

Since we're not aware of where we're going (sand, snow, or even saltwater) I'll take a couple of Marine Tuf-Cloths along.

I also may try to sneak a Cold Steel Safekeeper 1 and/or a Spyderco Civilian along(just in case

)

I'd forget the multitool, the engineers/armorers can fix whatevers broken. I'm going to war to DESTROY things.

(Just kidding on that last part, I'm actually a very nice, peace loving man. Honest

Hmmmm.....

The Corps is going to issue me a nice thick sharpened prybar in the 7 inch range known as the M9 bayonet. It will take a decent edge (when they allow you to sharpen it), cut wire, open cans, saw light metal, and you can pry with it. If it breaks, you can get another one for free.

Other than that, maybe a medium to large folder like a Spyderco Military, MT SOCOM, or a Sebenza. Or perhaps a small to medium fixed blade such as a Simonich Cetan or Wambli, Livesay's US Marshall, Blackwood's Small Hunter, Griffith's Patrolman, etc....

I like what grnamin said, I GET TO SERVE AGAIN. Actually, I'm in the Army Reserve and myself getting activated is much more likely than the draft returning. Someone loan me a SH -E for the duration of my tour??

Tops Interceptor w/Micarta handle. .250" of 1095 steel, and saw teeth. What more could you need?

As far as being drafted though, I never went into the Military because I couldn't take to someone giving me orders to well, and I still can't.(maybe that's why they won't give me that promotion
