Here's a couple shots that show a construction I'm working on, "hidden full tang". It's 17 inches OAL. It's a new thing for me.

I'm going to wrap over the handle with Turks head knots to make a nice flowing transition, and grip, between the bolster and the end pieces. The tang and rivets won't show after I'm finished wrapping and sealing it all. For the sealer, on the woven cotton cord, I'm going to start with some thin orange flake shellac, so it gets in real good through capillary reaction, then top coat it off with Frankincense and/or Pinon pine rosin varnish for extra grip and aroma. :)

If nothing else, I want to be able to say,.. "I had some of the best smelling knives in the world!" LOL :D

Thanks!

I used nice tight friction fits on the handle and end pieces and sealed the interior parts with epoxy. The end pieces are a washer and stud fit to the radius of the rosewood end.

Thanks guys.

I started with a piece of 7/8 inch round W2 I got from Don a while back. It's all free hand forging with hand hammers. :)

It looks like the hidden tang is short of the end of the end piece/butt plate. If so, how is the end piece/washer attached?

Looking forward to seeing it finished....its going to look great.

The stem on the stud is tapered and fits tightly through the washer so it can't spin,... a friction fit. I actually had to hammer it through. Then the stem is driven tightly (with a mallet) into a pilot hole in the wood like a nail, and sealed with epoxy. The washer is also bent to the radius of the end of the wood, so it can't spin.

I'm working on the wrapping today, which is one of those tedious jobs that's hard to focus on. However, I know it's going to really help pull this piece off.

just looking at it makes me want to head into the shop....

I still have along ways to go
