Contego haters, please stand up

To be fair the 810 Contego is a Black Class knife designed for military, LE and first responders.

Many of the elements that make it undesirable to the casual or regular knife user are exactly what make it an asset or desirable to it's targeted user group. Especially the super sure grip it offers.

Not sure BM expected the crossover appeal it would have but they did follow up later with the 810-1401 that doesn't have the glass breaker and much more friendly G-10 scales.

My hands have calloused over many years of hard work. They actually haven't been baby butt smooth since about 8th grade.

Maybe that's why the Contego doesn't bother me?

If you don't like it, change it. There's a knife in there, somewhere.

Now this is a proper knife! This is what it should have been from the start! I would have bought this one!

Original is soo ugly only its mother could love it! It looked like it was designed by gov't committee, too many ugly humps on blade and too long, wide, not very ergonomic handle and unnecessary glass breaker!

Oddly enough, the one pictured above Does start to look like the 950. Someone said it was the solution and that's not a bad idea~!

I felt the same way with the 950 when I got it into my hand, I knew it was not going to work. Sold it shortly after. The Contego is better for me. I just cannot hate the Contego. Sorry

Wrong blade steel for me.

I'm a slow worker, but here's the progress so far.

Liking it more with every grind.

I ground a few of the more prominent jimp nubs off of the liners and it changed the knife completely. Initially, holding the 810 was like grabbing a crabshell. Once these were removed, it became my go-to for hard use, and actually replaced my fixed-blade Nimravus in tasks that require something less than a Busse.

So far, I've had the bushings oxidize and adhere to the blade (couldn't open it one-handed), rust spots on the edge and areas where the blade coating has scratched off, rusted backspacer, and a small amount of lock rock which may have been my fault. I like that I don't care for this knife, as it means I carry no sentimental feelings toward it, and subsequently beat the piss out of it.

If anyone wants to improve the usability of their Contego, grind these nubs off:

Sorry people but I love mine so much I bought the fixed blade. I do admit to lightly sanding the G-10 as it was gripping my pocket so much it would turn it inside out. I also flexed the pocket clip so it has less tension but I do that to all my knives. Sorry you do not like yours but I love mine.

I second this! I own the M390 Blue/Black version and love it. I've also played with the all black version which felt the same to me. The Contego is a black class knife, remember that.

I did as Cypress suggested in post 29. I took some sand paper to several offending spines and just barely broke the edge of the handle. The scallops were very crisp. Also, I sanded a little under the pocket clip to save my attire. About 45 minutes of bonding the day after it arrived sealed the deal. I knew there was no going back resale wise once I got going. Once done however, I knew it was mine forever. Awesome knife and the steel is so so good!!! Keep some oil on the laser etchings if you get it sweaty. To qualify positing here, don't want to seem fan boy, the knife was harsh out of the box. It needed a small amount of TLC.

My ONLY gripe as of now is it's just a bit much for minor public cutting tasks. It's mostly how you handle yourself, don't act a fool with a blade. Still, despite the law favoring me, I just feel a tiny bit rude pulling it out opening a stubborn salad dressing packet. I could cut the table in half and still shave hair off my arm with the 810!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I purchased the KW LE and the handle is not sharp at all. Fantastic big blade

No hate.

the M4 steel and the blade shape, I really want to like it as it's visually appealing, but my hand screamed in agony when holding it

Have you tried KW's 810-1401 M390 Blue/Black version? The scales IMO are not nearly as sharp as the original Black handled 810. Much more comfortable.

I love my 810. I do agree with extensive work the handle can become uncomfortable but then again I also don't use dawn soap to soften up my hands. I think I enjoy it because it is a hard use folder and with that comes along some grip. Maybe a tad too much but in a situation where I need it it's just perfect
