Yeah the title says it all pretty much. He wants to do them and is running out of idea's, let's help him. All of us is smarter than one of us. So to make easier for him to read we outta not fill this thread with too much b.s. or chat. Hope this turns out some good ideas.

I'll start,
1) build a bow & arrow set
2) Medical skills - not just build a kit but demonstrate an actual skill, like splinting an arm or leg in the woods
3) Build a stone tool
4) Survival food, I dont know I'm not good at wild edibles but a contest might force me to learn.

I like the idea of being given a task (boil water, build shelter,etc..) and the only man-made thing allowed to be used is a Becker. Everything else has to be crafted from natural materials with the Becker or your bare hands. (of course my choice of Becker in these challenges would be Ethan)

Or

Maybe a photo contest that involves submitting a photo showing the many different and creative things that can be done with a Becker--for example a fire out of wood split by your becker, a spoon carved by same becker (or different one), and so on---the more examples/tasks and the more creative, the better your chances of winning.

I like the bow and arrow idea. My son was just asking about making a set, so it would be a fun one for us.

Other things that come to mind:
  • Overnight winter camp
  • Navigation skill (map and compass, not GPS)
  • Game cleaning / processing

I'd like to see a three part Becker challenge like a Land Sea and City challenge. To be more specific use a Becker or Beckers in the woods, on the water and in everyday or city life.

How about something showing the versatility of the Becker line.. Like maybe a Bizarro Becker challenge, do something with your knife it is totally not suited for (e.g. Chopping with a Remora, filet a fish with a machax, use a BK2 as a letter opener) the more ridiculous the contortions you have to go through the better.

It would at least have comedic value.

carve a small trinket with the Brute :D

Yeah, a new trap & snare contest would be good. Twitch up or treadle snare something like that.

Use Beckers to harvest ingredients and prepare bush glue. Then go a-pranking. Glue a 'kick me' sign to a hibernating bear, for instance.

mmm, contests involving knives that nobody has :) or are hard to get...

the most uses for vaseline?

Paracord bracelet making contest. The goal? To adorn the Trinity and Uncle Weird Beard in paracord up to their shoulders.

I like the idea of doing some contests more than once (once a year or something, make it an annual thing).

Also, I'll speak for those of us more... Urban... Beckerheads. With my course load and current living situation, its not really feasible for me to go out and build shelters (even though I want to). So throwing in the occasional contest that we can participate in is always appreciated.

I'll keep thinking, and who knows, maybe I'll come up with something epic.

Got a few ideas here (all of these would preferably be done with a Becker knife):

- make camp fire (using nothing but your knife. no fire steel etc for lighting it)

- make some form of shelter

- procure and prepare some sort of food (wild plants or game)

I will agree that some of the contests need repeated. In particular the August 2011 Challenge needs to have new participants. I learned more on that weekend than I ever did anywhere else. I can promise you that if you do that challenge and stick to the rules you will appreciate it after it is done.

Some continuity between contests would be interesting. Not that there hasn't been, but think of something like this: 1st month, you have to make x amount of cordage. Then 2nd month, you have to use made cordage to make a specific item or items. You can make cordage out of all kinds of things, and the city dwellers could make it out of items they could acquire or if able make it out of natural materials. Anyone ever see rope made out of plastic shopping bags? That stuff is surprisingly strong. So if the city dwellers couldn't participate in the 2nd month challenge, at least they would have had a shot at the 1st month challenge.

Well, since I'm finally a Beckerhead and can actually participate this time I guess I should voice my opinion here.

While I would love to do a bow and arrow challenge, that is made harder for me since I live in Norway. It's a very wet country and so it would be hard to make a bow during the winter due to the cold temperatures. I'm afraid the wood might crack. However I'd love to see a challenge like this in the spring. I believe there is a nice ash tree not too far from here that would suit the task nicely :) . Of course I could take some wood inside now and have it waiting for the challenge. But that would kind of ruin the experience.

Edible plant challenge is also pretty much out of the picture for me as pretty much everything that is edible is covered by a thick layer of ice and snow. Everything that is found on the ground is impossible to get to this time of year. Back in the stone ages the temperatures were quite a bit higher here in the north, and so it was easier for the early hunter gatherer tribes to get food back then. Nowadays it’s pretty much impossible to find edible things during the winter. The only food that remains is fish, birds and mammals.

Some of the other ideas that I think are more suited for winter would be shelter building, fire making, and trap making. I guess they have all been done before. But I don’t think anyone is getting tired of them yet ;)
