Contest Participation, or rather, the lack thereof.

Anyone got any ideas as to why participation numbers are down? I just noticed Crewdawg had a contest for a pretty snazzy leather wallet, and I know a ton of you folks are big fans of leather, yet there were very few participants. Was the same with the last challenge, and the one before that, and the one before that. What gives people? A lot of these contests have been open to everyone, which you would think the non-beckerheads among us would be jumping on, especially for some of the awesome goodies that have been given out. I don't know about you guys, but winning a knife or whatever is pretty darn satisfying to me. Are none of the rest of you competitive? I don't enter every contest because I don't think it would be fair to the newer folks that might not have the experience I do or whatever, so I want to make sure others have a chance to win too (and yeah, I suppose that does sound a bit pompous, but if it involves actually doing something, I play to win). So, what is happening folks? Where is your competitive spirit? I see a lot of sign ups in almost every contest thread or challenge, but then when the finish line finally rolls around there ends up only being a couple of participants.

Summer time...and the living is easy...

August and Labor day I suppose got a lot of folks occupied off the webs.

Not sure about everyone else, but I mostly post from my phone and then forget when I'm actually at my computer.

No idea about contests here in general. That particular contest though, I can at least explain my lack of entry. When I first read it no one had entered and this being a Becker subforum, I assumed everyone would just use an 11. I have a load of different bottle openers, but no 11 so I stayed out.

IMHO, there are just so many contests now, here and other areas of the forums, that its kind of lost its luster so to speak. Again, that's just me. And, because there are just so many of these, I really never even open contest threads anymore.

Edit: name change because I got tired of typing whole thing all the time.

Edit: Cubs are in town this week. If any CO Beckerheads want to meet up at a game to watch two incredibly crappy teams attempt to play baseball, shoot me a pm!

I think the Cubbies have been doing so poorly for so long, everyone is a closet Cubs fan and wants to see them make good. I know I would like to see them have a good season for a change, and I am a Yankees fan.

106 years and going strong!!!!! Go Cubbies!

I don't usually enter cause 1) I'm lazy, if it isn't something I can do right then and there I will forget to do it, 2) I recently had a bit of an "episode" so I decided I wouldn't enter for a while just cause it didn't seem right to, 3) I already have a wicked cool leather wallet that was made specifically from me of black leather with red stitching which has since been nicknamed the "LT1" in remembrance of my old camaro.

Personally, I've been on the move a lot lately. My apt in CA wasn't knife friendly, and my current apt just doesn't have anything for me to use for a contest.

So this will sound bad, but because I've got such small amounts of discretionary $$, I've decided for the past while to only win knives, and not buy them (haven't bought a knife since last Dec, but I've only won like 1 since then so its not going too well ). So when you see knives as the prize for the contest, and if its something you might be able to do from an apt in the middle of the city you'll generally see me in there. If its not, then I have a hard time entering.

I think other than that its just time. People look at what the contest is for, think about how long it would take them to make a good entry and then think about their chance of winning. With how busy people are, sometimes its just not worth it to put lots of time into something you won't likely win, so they decide to do something else with their time.

And Derekh, I'm kinda like you with not entering all the contests. Particularly the ones where I already have the blade or something close to it. I figure give someone else the chance.

Now, bring on the tweener contests. I've got to get me one of those :).

I haven't seen as many contests up recently honestly. Maybe I'm just missing them. I unfortunately don't have the time to read every thread. Maybe we could start a "Contests" sticky thread and have sections for "Current Contests" and "Closed Contests"? I know I would check that pretty much every day.

I kind of feel weird entering every contest I can. It's not that I don't like winning knives and I'm certainly not going to win them all. The one's I like to get in on are ones that help me build a skill. There are some that I've done the challenge and simply not gotten my entry in. I was fortunate enough to win a BK2 this year and give away a BK14 and a few sets of tweener handle liners, so I'm definitely interested in learning from the contests. I do like to do it right, if I'm going to take the time to enter, so I guess it comes down to time. If it's something that I have an idea for and don't have time to finish right it before the contest is done, I won't enter. A few I have finished after they've closed, just for my own satisfaction.

I have never entered one - not really my thing. I may have to look at them and see what I can do. I have seen them posted and read the details of them but just never got too interested in them.

I'm glad you started this thread Derek.
I actually PM'd Crewdawg last night and told him how cool it was of him to award all of the entrants.
I also told him why I did not enter. I thought it was a cool contest with a great prize.
I didn't enter because I've been lucky enough to win a few prizes through contests here on the forum.
Some very fine gear has come my way through contest wins and I'm very grateful.
I'm just to the point to where I feel like I need to give back before I take any more. Does that make sense?
I just feel like sometimes a lot of my threads/posts don't contribute much to the overall BK&T community.
I don't want to be one of those guys who just hangs around to try and win contests.
Now, with that being said, it seems alot of members didn't enter Crewdawgs contest beacause of plain laziness. I can't abide by that.
Had I known this would be the case, I would have definitely entered.
I really enjoy the contests here on the forum and seeing others entries are half the fun.
I always enjoy seeing the generosity of others as well. Crewdawg has shown yet another fine example of this forums generosity.
So, until my next contest/giveaway(coming up on 1000 posts soon), I may enter contests but ask not to win the prize.
Hey, the contests are a blast!

Like others, I saw the contest opener (pun intended) and thought it would be cool to enter. I actually started thinking about how I would photo the event. Then life happened and I forgot all about it.
And you know what they say... Once a thread gets on the second page, it might as well have been sent to Hell!

I guess I misunderstood Crewdawgs contest. I thought it was for BK-11s only. I don't have a BK11 so I didn't think I was eligible to enter.

Sorry Crewdawg.

Sorry Crewdawg.

Same here, didn't read carefully, my own fault I missed out.

Honestly, most of the time I just cant come up with an entry and after that I just forget about the whole thing eventually. If not then its either the 18+ rule for blades or people just wont ship internationally. Ah well, I'll get into contests eventually...

I've been pretty inactive on the board for the last few months until a few days ago. And before that I passed on a few because I figured I didn't have much of a shot at winning anyway.
