Controversial Threads

Some of my threads are controversial and I can be very opinionated and even
seem arrogant at times. But my purpose is to ask the question, generate
informative, productive and though provoking discussion by the
inexperienced and experts alike on topics that affect and/or will affect us
all and the industry in general.

When you vote for your public official, it's a very personnel and
individual decision, however you want as much information and views
presented beforehand as possible.

Most issues we discuss in our treads ultimately come down to individual
preference and decision, however the treads and post should offer advise to
help in these decisions.

So if it appears that I'm trying to force my opinions and views, it's more
likely that I'm just trying to generate participation and discussion. Forum
threads may not always determine what is right or wrong, however the good
ones generate thought and discussion and that is always a good thing.

My main reason and/or focus for my threads is usually on keeping the new
collector educated, interested and in play, as the collector/maker ratio is very
important to us all.

The micarta and the micarta survey thread sure has generated more
discussion on micarta vs natural handle materials than I anticipated,
however in the end it just might have an impact.

Who knows?
The mid price range collector who has just decided to dip into his savings
to acquire that first high-end piece, might decide to add a few hundred
more to get nice stag over micarta to help protect his investment?

Jerry Fisk may decide his next NLT needs to have a micarta handle?

Don Hanson may decide to convert his ivory manufacturing felicity over to
micarta?

But seriously guys and girls, lets just all relax and try to learn as much
as we can, to make a difference and be thankful for ALL the different
opinions and views presented and that they can be presented.

kevin....i am a novice collector by some standards and by others i have way too many knives that cost way too much money.....i do not post much on bf but i have been posting more often lately.....i for one like your threads and always ake a little bit of info out of them.....one of the nice factors is that the makers themselves even post.....i'd like to thank makers such as nick wheeler, jerry fisk, don hanson, and all of the big time collectors as well....oh yeah don't forget coop:D ....the custom knife market is expanding but i would still consider it a small pond compared to an ocean.....my thoughts on certain issues in regards to knives and knifemaking have definately changed due to threads started by you and many others on bladeforums.....in short...thanks for posting...keep on posting and hopefully even more makers will start to post...that will only result in better knives for everyone.....ryan

Kevin.
When you know what you're talking about, you're
not opinionated, you're KNOWLEDGABLE......

Keep'em coming Kevin -my posting and contributions have dropped due to commitments elsewhere, but I'm still watching.

I agree with Stephen, Russ and Ryan. Kevin and Kohai999 make me think and keep me on the right track. It is good to read threads that stir the pot in the right way and your opinions and thoughts do not come across as self serving or with alternate agendas.

Kevin,
Your threads are very informative and I wouldn't consider them controversial. If I may steal a quote from another forum I frequent (tradgang.com) "Debate is healthy, as one sword sharpens another, but it must be done in an honorable fashion."
Bob

Kevin, you lead by example. Your posts show thoroughness in your questions, but more importantly in their delivery.

It's disappointing to read, every once in a while, about generalizations about bashing and misinformation in online forums. THIS place gives plenty of food for the mind, and avoids the controversies as best as possible.

Thanks for your contributions.

I'm looking at my watch. We haven't had a custom vs handmade thread in at least a couple of months. Let the games begin.... :p ;)

Kevin,
Your threads are informative and fun and usually get the masses going. Keep it up  .

The one thing I DO wonder about is how you have time to post soo much here ;) . I joined a year before you and my contribution is miniscule compared to yours (I wish I could clone myself and have more time to participate or even study up on the subjects discussed).

SHOOT ME NOW (or maybe that should be "stab me" on this forum)! :p :D

Hi Kevin,

It guys like you and STeven who balance out the Keeper of Kum By Ya Coop! :D

Ok coop lets save time.

Custom is a knife that has never been made before and a client asks for it to be made with speicific requirements.

If the knife has been made before and someone makes changes it to it...it is customized.

Custom is also a "Marketing" term in the lexicon of knives to describe knives made by one individual.

Handmade...literally with regards to custom knives does not exist. As tools are used bother power and hand.

Handmade is also a "Marketing" term used by some to rekindle a by gone era of old world craftsman ship.

Please cut and paste this to the top of the forum.

Also, according to Russ..I an not abrasive, hard edged or opinionated! I am knowledgeable! :D

Does this mean years from now I will be "Colorful"!

Seriously Kevin,

I think your threads have helped more makers and collectors than you know. Especially the business oriented threads for the makers.

Coop is kumbaya because he can't afford to piss off prospective clients.....it makes sense....sort of.

I think Kevin likes a certain amount of pathos and bathos, as do I........milquetoast sucks the big weenie......unfortunately you have to beat a negative word out of some people these days. The truth can be very controversial, and sometimes hurts people's feelings.

Kevin, you should keep on keepin' on, you know you are doing the right thing!

WWG, you can't be "colorful" until you get a bunch of tattoos, new times, new rules.:p

Best Regards,

Hi STeven,

OOPS! Wow, I really screwed up!

If you really think that your "shiny happy" personality is what got you where you are, you are selling yourself!!

I believe that your very solid business mind, combined with a passion and knowledge for this craft is what got you where you are.

Lemme be the first to let you know, WWG, Miss Mary Sunshine....you ain't!:p

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I appreciate your viewpoints, opinions, and hard nosed facts. To the casual observer, you might come off as a little opinionated, but you guys know your stuff, and don't mind sharing your knowledge, which I appreciate (and I don't think you guys are a-holes, there is a difference between the two). For someone just sticking their big toe in the custom market, I have learned a lot lurking here.

Keep em comin'!

Opinionated and knowledgeable works for me.

I never get the feeling that you're trying to force a consensus. Increased awareness of the issue, yes, but not consensus.

Besides, it's always interesting to see what comes through the door after you open it.

Nobody can force their opinions on me. I welcome discussion and debate, even heated debate. I think we are all opinionated, at least I know I am.

Kevin, keep it up. Your threads have lead to more knowledgeable information being presented than most of the others I have seen. If some people get their panties in a knot, oh well.

Kevin,
You are knowledgable and everyone has an opinion,we wouldn't be people if we didn't.
The sometimes lively discussions here only further knowledge that needs to get out there.
It's always a pleasure reading your threads and the info on Fisk's knives alone are worth the price of admission.

Post away and THANKS!

Doug
