CONUS ONLY

This one kind of makes me scratch my head. 1st Class Letter and Flat Rate Boxes/Envelopes cost the same to anywhere in the USA. AK and HI cost no more. Other mailings are based on weight and distance but saying CONUS ONLY is like saying I won't ship beyond the Mississippi River because it costs too much.

Enlighten me please if I am missing something here.

I think Missouri is in the CONUS! :D

Maybe people think a package is more likely to be lost or damaged going to Alaska or Hawaii?

Not everyone knows that the United States contains 50 states. You'd be surprised at how many people out there are like this.

I suspect this is the case. Does this mean they don't have a clue as to what CONUS means?

I'll confess to my ignorance: I thought it cost more to mail/ship to HI or Alaska.

It does cost more, just like it costs more to ship from Chicago to LA than from Chicago to Kansas City. But Flat Rate is the same anywhere within ALL 50 states.

Not trying to belittle anyone with this thread. My intent is to shed some light on the topic. Sorry if I have offended anyone.

I always post CONUS only...I don't know why as I've shipped to HI and Canada and I'd be happy to ship to Alaska... Hmmm.

Sometimes I see "CONUS +2". I've never inquired, but I assume the "+2" are Hawaii and Alaska.

It may depend on what's being shipped.......Varied laws about knives......varied
import duties....etc.

Perhaps it's just monkey see, monkey do.

That's the reason I used to say "conus only". I saw a lot of sale threads posted by people who have been here a lot longer than me listing "conus only", so I assumed flat rate boxes didn't include Alaska and Hawaii.
Switched to "US only" since I found out there is no extra charge.

Being that I live in Alaska, I have to deal with this problem all the time. I just contact the seller and educate about the shipping cost to Alaska. By doing this most sellers have always sold me what I have been trying to buy at no addtional cost. On another note UPS even does ground shipping to Alaska. Basically a package will get sent up here via airplane like all other packages and then it will sit at a UPS station for the required number of days before it gets delivered.

i like this thread, great info for all.i never really had a problem shipping an receiving.most members i dealt with never asked me for extra shipping charges...but a funny thing did happen to me when i first joined,on a trade with a member that is no longer on this forum,he did tell me he would not ship to hawaii because international shipping was to expensive an he did not want to deal with international customs..once i explained to him that we were part of the united states,an he had to verify this with his post office we traded the next day..

I will go along with there might be some knife laws in HI and AK that folks are concerned with but there are no import duties within the USA.

You are correct.
"CONUS" excluding our 49th and 50th states didn't immediately register........

I think the only knives in Alaska that cannot be carried are auto's and gravity knives unless your are law enforcement. So any other knife should be able to be purchased and shipped up here. At least that's how I understand it.

what i've come to realize is that it doesn't matter what your requirements are because people will still ask.

i often request CONUS only and still have people asking if i'll ship to Hawaii, Alaska or Canada and i've done it.

apparently it just makes some of us feel safer if the item stays within the states. it's a false sense of security i suppose.

why when i post "no trades please", do i still receive emails with trade offers?

the real question is, are people really not willing to ship to Alaska and/or Hawaii?

my preference is to keep it within the states but i've never actually denied anyone.

You want ? You need? Ihave. I ship , you pay. Simple language in any local.

When you say "...keep it within the states..." do you mean limit shipping to United States locations or limit shipping to the 48 contiguous/continental states (i.e. CONUS)?

Having just moved to AK from HI the "ship to CONUS only via USPS priority" statement in many sales threads has puzzled me as well. One seller I asked said that it was to avoid shipping to difficult-to-find addresses due to a very rural or remote nature. I can understand the caution, but I don't quite buy it since there are MANY rural/remote/austere addresses on the CONUS side. Anyway, having had many knives shipped to both HI & AK I can say I have yet to have a problem - flat rate priority boxes show up with fairly regular frequency, with maybe an extra day of shipping time
