CONUS Only ?

When you say "...keep it within the states..." do you mean limit shipping to United States locations or limit shipping to the 48 contiguous/continental states (i.e. CONUS)?

Having just moved to AK from HI the "ship to CONUS only via USPS priority" statement in many sales threads has puzzled me as well. One seller I asked said that it was to avoid shipping to difficult-to-find addresses due to a very rural or remote nature. I can understand the caution, but I don't quite buy it since there are MANY rural/remote/austere addresses on the CONUS side. Anyway, having had many knives shipped to both HI & AK I can say I have yet to have a problem - flat rate priority boxes show up with fairly regular frequency, with maybe an extra day of shipping time

it's up to the seller whether or not he/she is comfortable shipping even just out of their state.

again, i've never denied anyone so requesting CONUS has just been a strange habit (and yes that means exclusively within the continental states).

i've learned that regardless of what your rules are, people aren't afraid of asking.

The CON in CONUS is for contiguous, not continental. Alaska would be included if it meant continental.

I think AZ2AK is just asking for clarification, because your first post was kind of self-contradicting: You say you prefer to keep it within the states, but you also say people request CONUS only because shipping within the states feels safer (but of course AK and HI are states).

CONUS sure is used allot around here... Monkey see, monkey do for sure, but most use it to keep international buyers away. Unknowingly keeping HI out in the cold, but leaving AK there for a reason. (Some of us have seen Flying Wild Alaska and have heard the horror stories about the post being more than shady...) As an international member myself I find it frustrating how I'm kept from the good stuff because of preconceptions about international sales. (Too much hassle, expensive, troublesome buyers , customs trouble and lost packages... Most of which are unproblematic if one cares to look.)-> And keeping it within the US? By selling to international buyers, you do your economy good, bringing money in and sending stuff out. Better plan than new bailouts, no?:p

CONUS Continental United States
CONUS Contiguous United States
CONUS Conterminous United States

^ i had it mixed up which is fairly easy to do.

i'm not debating on the issue just in case that's how you took it.

the term "within the states" can be taken a few different ways though...(and yes, i understand that hawaii and alaska are states).

the lower 48 are the contiguous united states right? that's what i meant when i said ship within the states.
i had the terms confused for whatever reason.

CONUS and OCONUS are acronyms used by the United States Department of Defense.

CONUS = Continental United States, but for purposes of per diem payments, cost of living allowance, etc it is actually the 48 contiguous states...
OCONUS = Outside Continental United States... Alaska* and Hawaii are included for purposes of per diem payments, cost of living allowances, etc

*Alaska is geographically part of the Continental United States

I shipped out a USPS flat rate box to Kodiak Island, AK and it arrived about four days later in excellent shape. I have another one leaving for AK early next week. My one and only Zaan, my very first CRK, came to me from the Big Island of Hawaii. Yes, it was an old knife...2005, but dusty and unused and congealed grease (I suspect) and immediately sent it to our friends in CRK for a spa job. My very favorite CRK, and the only one I seldom carry, as I cannot close the knife one-handed. (Weak thumb muscles...due to being thousands of years old...my thumb, not the Zaan.)

p.s. OTOH, shipping outside of the U.S. can be tedious and painful. I've heard horror stories about shipping to Australia. And, I shipped a Strider to Germany about a month or so ago, and I got word yesterday that the owner can now go to the Customs Office to pick up his folder. Their Customs has had in their office for WEEKS. But, at least he will receive it. His extra mailing costs, paid to me in advance, of course, were about $36 U.S. dollars for mailing and special registration...where it must be signed for at every step on its journey...hopefully to reduce theft. He asked that it be shipped in this manner and INSURANCE cannot be used. I verified this at my local p.o. and they assured me it would get there. They were correct.

Not sure if this is US vs International, but if that is the case, I can understand why many may not be willing to ship international - time, or rather lack of it. For all international shipments, you must fill customs forms, visit the PO, and stand in the queue. If you happen to be in large cities, like San Francisco, then that "queue" can be a significant time consuming affair. Merely adding the additional cost of shipping may not cover for the amount of time you spend in the queue, nor your gas if the PO happens to be far away.

As for the 48 or 50 states, I think it is mostly confusion of terms - and I am guilty was well. I think best is saying "within the US", or "wherever USPS Priority takes it for $6". :-)
