Convexing a Machax by hand- WIP (Pic Heavy)

It'll be one hell of a draw knife. I couldn't resist and started shaving some of my work station. Choppy, choppy, slicy, slicy.

Maybe two or three... it isn't really super time consuming to file, and I really enjoy it. Get the right light, and basically sculpt it with the file, Damn I love it.
Now if I want to get crazy with the hand sanding, that is where the time lies.
 
Now that is awesome! The body of the machax is now a lot like a beach with calm waves touching the shore line. I can't wait to see the results on its cutting dynamics (or however its called :D). That is probably the sexiest machax I have seen yet. Awesome project!
 
Wow! Would you consider helping a fellow Beckerhead out and doing that for my BK2 when you find time? We could work out some sort of payment. Just amazing.

I suggest just doing it yourself. It is a fun project, and not all that time consuming. If you decide to do it and have any questions, please just ask.
I am by no means an expert, just a redneck with a work bench.:D
Also, I don't want to be responsible for a filing snafu and ruining your knife.:D
 
Spent a little time sanding this morning. Went through about a sheet and a half of 150 grit.

There is still a bunch of file marks, but I am pretty satisfied so far. Might just take it up to 400 grit. Figured I could do a high polish, but this is a working blade, so that nice polish will be gone within the first couple swings.
 
I know it's been a while.
Rather than take it to a polish, I decided to stop at 400 grit.
Figured the shine would be gone after the first couple swings..
It looks better with dirt and sap on it anyway.

Got a nice workout this weekend.
It chops much better now.
 
Damn man, you did a hell of a nice job on that. I know that took some major elbow grease. Really nice work.

I know it prevents copper from doing it. The chalk is basically a barrier between the bottom of the file teeth and the material being filed. Makes it much easier to clean the file.

Really really impressive!!! I hope you get a chance to get out in the woods and give her a workout soon. I'd love to see what she can do to some dead wood.

Not yet. But I put a secondary bevel on it. Left the edge thick at the sweet spot for stability and thinned it out some closer to the handle, to make for a draw knife.
Last weekend, I chopped up a couple dead cedar, red bud, and persimmon limbs and the edge held up just fine.
Going back out there tomorrow and may do a little chopping on some soft maples, if I can do so without giving myself heat stroke.
May start a new thread of in use stuff.
