Convince me to buy a BK15

I wrapped the handle because I dont like the handle..lol but its ALOT of knife, and the 15 is the 15, its damn near perfect. I cut the heck out of the bo Dex shipped em in ..lol

Yep, that Parangatang handle is a bit slippery for that much blade, good idea on wrapping it !

I have a ZK War Sword (same JAB handle design), and I ended up making some blujean micarta for it where I left a prominent flare at the butt/pomel end. That REALLY made a big difference in comfort IMO. That, and for chopping I feel you NEED to have a lanyard with that handle design.

Also, is your 15's top retention strap quite tight? When I first got mine I almost couldn't button the top button. Its loosened up a bit, but I still don't think I'll be able to add liners or anything like that and have the top snap close. The bottom one is more or less fine, but that top one is a beast.

Both snaps on my 15 work well, the bottom one I have to pull it around a little in order to get it to snap but both snap without much problem.

Blujean micarta, sounds pretty nice, I bet that would help a lot with that.

Even though it appears to have a good grippy surface, it's pretty slick feeling;

The photos of the micarta aren't current, as I did more shaping to thin the palm swell area, but you can get the general idea. They're "finished" with something like 80 grit sandpaper, so they've got a lot of grip on them.

And I'll try to post some photos of my BK15 later tonight just to make sure the thread stays on topic :).

And its good to hear that your snaps aren't as tight as mine. I hope they just wear in a bit more.

So I unwrapped the Parangatang, and took the handles off, then I slid innertube over the knife and re mounted the handles over the top of the inner tube. Added some thickness, a little squish, and added grippyness over the tang. Feels better for sure.

Well....it worked on me. Had no plans to buy a bk15, wasn't even on my priority knife purchase list.

But I read through the whole thread last night and now somehow I've got a bk15 on the way from Dex.
I've been wanting to get into beckers for a while....I love the price point, and I love the ease of customization and modifications. Can't wait for my bk15!

^I had the same question Nick. Turns out, he's a new paying distributor who seems to favor/enjoy Beckers. It seems he's kind of in the same category as Ben (42blades) from Baronyxknife.com. Dex's site is Coyleoutdoors.com (IIRC), and he was/is running a sale on the BK5/15/4 just like knifecenter was, and he seems to be a stand up guy from what I've seen around here (haven't ordered anything from him yet personally, so its hard to comment).

Good to see you around man :).

Seems we all got one....So who's dex?

I'm Dex. Real name is Tate but everyone here just calls me DEX. lol

If y'all need anything, just let me know.

I am getting more BK-5's and BK-15's but this may be the last order I can get at this price.

It certainly is a very nice knife, one thing to let you guys/gals know on the sheath, I made mention in my 5 and 15 thread, you can slip some leather down behind the plastic sleeve and then the other half fold down inside the sleeve and that provides some compression of the knife into the sheath, so when the snaps are undone, there isn't any flopping around of the knife, it's held pretty securely now, works great, also did that for my 5 which made a big improvement in carry.

Tha handles are Spalted Maple.

As to why its one of my top 5 production knives. Some of it is personal taste. I LOVE a trailing point knife. The rest of it is pure geometry. The purpose of a knife is to cut, and the 15 truly excells at that. People tend to look at it and the 5, or handle them and say, it feels quick, its a great cutter, but its so thin. How will it hold up to abuse, or real outdoor use. Then people say stuff like, its great in the kitchen, or its a world class steak knife. Those statememnts bother me because they take ALOT away from what it actually is.

The one in the pictures I posted was gifted to me by Ethan at a Gathering. I used it for some of the contest stuff, used it for food, and generally beat the crap out of it. At the end of the gather it was still sharp as it came, (which was very) and perfectly intact. Combined with the fact that it had been a gift from the boss this motivated me to make it something even more special, so I had it customized with the wooden handles and a trade knife style leather sheath. I also thinned the edge and it still handles being beaten through wood like a champ.

So I guess its one of my favorites because.

1: Fantastic designers, and company behind it.

2: Exceptional cutter, and thats what knives are made for.

3: Much tougher than people give it credit for.

4: Great size. Ever since I got my first BK-5 I thought "Man I wish I could get one that was just a bit smaller" and Bam enter the 15

5: Its very good as a belt knife. I have tried drilling, batoning, food prep, and even attempted some trap/shelter building, (Although I am not great at those things yet) It handled everything without a hitch.

6: Personal preference. Its such a classic style, but done in a modern way with modern materials. This knife is very much in the style of the knives that tamed this country, and traveled the length and breadth of this country on the belt of guys who used them for EVERYTHING, and counted on to keep them alive.
I am sure most of those guys would have given their left nut to have this version.

I wish I could think of a way to say it better - but this says it all.

I'm a Becker fan.
I like tough, rugged, functional knives - work horses, not show horses.
I like production knives in a price range that encourages use; I already have enough safe queens.
I was looking for a lightweight field dressing, slicing, general purpose knife smaller than heavy-duty brutes.

It was love at first sight with the BK-15.
