Convince me to strip my 15.

Because piratey trailing point knives like the bk15 are old school and need to be stripped. Imagine that stripped knife with old patina, homemade wood scales and a homemade leather sheath. Old school defined with modern Becker/Fisk goodness.

I dislike coatings in general, and while my 15 still has its coating, its not likely to keep it.

Cuts better, looks better, easier to clean.

Gratz on the new steel, and keep up the good work :).

Might do it tomorrow. I need to figure out how to get deep etches doing electro etching..

Easy peasy ...

Make the water super salty. Do not let the Q-tip's wire touch the blade.

Thanks for posting the video.

I've done it before, but it didn't turn out great...

It darkens kinda automatically when you do the electro etching, right?

Not really.

Using AC instead of DC will blacken/mark it. Etch with DC then switch to AC to mark.

Do NOT use 110V from a wall socket! Gotta use LOW voltage AC, <24VAC, like from a door bell transformer or an AC Adapter that outputs VAC instead of VDC.

Are you people happy now? :D

Not sure how my etching worked out. We'll see when it's done.

I don't think you should strip it, personally; so I'll make no effort to convince you.

I'm seeing if I can get a "sawtooth" pattern on it by using some duct tape cut up into a spikey pattern and then putting mustard in the uncovered area.

Nah, never mind...it looks better black...put it back...

No thanks, it looks good the way it is... :D

The sawtooth idea failed, so now it just has an average patina on it. I'll probably get bored of this patina and do a new one soon though. Maybe pics tonight if I get time to post them after play practice.

Patinas are fun, like opening a present to see what's inside. Sometimes you get men, sometimes you get ooh yeahhh. If all else, just keep layering, no need to try to scrub off the old. I think the layers give a more authentic look.

Did you use French's Mustard? That stuff works pretty well. You have to leave it on long enough for it to start to stink... Then you know it's working.

My Dad's old Camillus Pilot's Survival Knife with mustard patina:

Granted, I also sprinkled some Apple Cider Vinegar on it as well. Can't wait to see the final images of yours...!

Noswad,

Nice work, isn't this fun?

BTW: Doesn't everyone remove that black protective shipping coating? :p

No.

Will we? We didn't get to see any pre-strip etching pics. I'll bet others who are contemplating etching would have found them beneficial.

And don't be stingy. Haven't heard anyone yet complain - "too many pics!" ;)

I like spicy brown mustard myself...works great for patinas too :D
Last knife I did I used cider vinegar and it turned out weak, switched to white and it seemed a lot stronger.
Then hit it 2x with the spicy mustard. Happy happy...
