Cop Question

ALAMEDA, I usually have atleast 2 knives on me at work, a small carbon fiber CRKT M16 in my shirt pocket which isn't very visible and a Kershaw Blur in my left rear pocket. I have thought about the possibility of someone "borrowing" the Kershaw without my permission and screwing up my day. I have been considering swapping the Kershaw for one of my CRKT Bladelocks. I would have to carry it for my right hand but most people would not know how to open it if they got it away from me. It would be the same basic idea as Runs with Scissors has.

You're the kinda guy who generally on a stop (depending on the age of the cop), gets moved along.

Dan

P.S.

I also think we've had it on this thread?

Not really. A thread can continue for many pages and days- Long after anyone really notices or cares about the original author or topic.

I am sorry, as I tooo missed the knife recommendation part. How much $$ do you want to spend? My Buck/Mayo TNT sits very low in the pocket, and so does my Spyderco Calypso, Jr. ZDP. As does my custom DMKnives Hawkbill and Instigator. My CRK Large Sebenza sits a bit higher, but I am comfy with it. I am also personally partial to framelock knives.

Hey Meeker....

My apologies.. I didn't intend to rub Anyone the wrong way..Not my intention at all..I'm sorry if I offended you or anyone else here for that matter...

What I intended to do is point out a few observations that I've seen over the years,, being around cops in several small towns in rural Ontario...

My point is that the mindset,, even though the goal (stay alive and catch the bad guy) is the same, the police I have come across in rural Ontario are different than the cops I have interacted with in MI, GA and Ohio..
American cops,,(and please correct me if I'm wrong,,and I just might be) seem to be more tactically minded.

ie. the customs agent yesterday at the Windsor/Detroit border,Armed to the teeth. A few things I noticed, Hatch Gloves, Spyderco clipped to the pocket, side arm drop leg rig 2 spare mag pouches, dual cuffs, Surefire light, OC spray.

Now on the Canadian side, handcuffs, baton, and maybe if they are lucky OC spray, no side arm, no tactical $hit period A Ballistic vest at best....

When I get comments such as "What kind of gun is that? from a Sargent, when it's a frigging Rem 870 Riot gun, or when I see Coppers fumbling a safety on the sidearm. I've seen cops fumble their way around a firearm and here comes the kicker..

I was registering a handgun, a snub nosed Colt detective special at a local PD.. The firearms officer,,left the revolver on the counter while he gathered some paper work, another officer walked by,, stopped,, looked at the revolver,, picked it up and dry fired it twice! I swear to god thats the truth..
I picked the revolver up and put it in my pocket until the other guy came back...I literally felt sick to my stomach after that...

So Yes I wonder about guys who want to be cops, just because it's cool,, or a cool job...Most of the cops I know around here ara all nice guys,, very professional, do their jobs extremely well, but it's the mindset here..
Canadian beat cops and I'm not talking about all cops or tactical guys,, but some just plain and simple have a different mindset then American Cops..

Hell I'd love to see the cops here get some better and newer gear..Hell they've only been carrying auto loaders for 10-12 years.. Most cops I see here still carry mag lights and mini mag lights on their duty belts.

We're on the same team here Meeker,, please don't take anything personal,, it's not that I'm putting anyone down,, just pointing out things I've seen..
I'm not an authority on police,,and never have claimed to...But I'll tell you what,, I'll shoot circles around some of these guys any day of the week....

Hell when the Brinks guys came to do Quals at our club, the going joke was, the safest place on the range was directly behind the targets...That was after a female Brinks guard discharged into the next booth....

And No sir,,my folding pocket knife is not a weapon, unless I have the Intent to use it in such a manner..
The same goes with the baseball bat, tire iron, and crowbar I have in the back of my truck, or the paring knive and scissors I have in my glove box... All are tools, and yes all can be weapons, as is the pen in my pocket, my belt, the rolled up newspaper under my arm, and the screw driver I forgot in my back pocket...It's what my intent is.

If I'm asked if I have any weapons on me I say No, and explain, However I do have a pocket knife. I've said it before,,and have only been questioned about it once or twice and asked to produce it.

Never a problem, because I'm always respectful, and I have absolutely no intent for it to be a weapon, and don't put myself in positions and avoid confrontation with anyone like the plague....

If I'm going somewhere where I know a blade might be a problem..Concert, G-ment building and such I scale back and sometimes don't carry a knife there at all..
I go to my childrens school constantly, and always carry a knife, and even have used a knife in his class.Never once had anyone question it,,or comment on it.If I did, out of respect I would remove it,,and never come there again carrying a knife....

A weapon can be Anything,,,,, absolutely anything.. Intent is what turns a tool into a weapon..

ttyle

Eric....

The Police around here are not gun or knife people at all, but the Paramedics......well, that's another story....

Nearly every shift at my ambulance station turns into some kind of show and tell, with 6 out of 10 of the crew members being fairly serious knife nuts. Almost everyone carries a blade or two, even though most on-the-job cutting is done with shears or Rescue Hooks. As for shooting, our Xmas party this year was a shoot out back of one of our crew members' property (BEFORE any drinks were had of course). After seeing everyone's arsenal, I'd say if our town is ever invaded by zombies, it'll be the Ambulance crew that saves the day...
