Cop's opinion on folding knives for police duty under $130.00

i have a hideaway and a lagriffe.

i agree with eb, the lagriffe is a better executed design, not that the hak is bad though.

alas, i am not permitted to carry a fixed blade on duty.

You can carry a Handgun, but not a fixed blade....

Somehow that just defies all logic.

There just isn't any difference in the amount of damage one can do to a person if needed with a 4" bladed knife between a FB and a folder.

Plus with that handgun you can hit from 50 to 75 yards if you are a good shot.

FWIW, since small fixed blades with good in-hand retention had been discussed (EKI La Griffe, HAK's, CS Pointman), I am an avowed fan of these designs and I nominate this one with the serrations -

It's the ONLY S&W knife I would recommend mainly because of its price point. You won't hurt much if you drop or lose it in the line of duty. I hate the sheath's retention system though.

I sliced away the plastic handles on my old one for no-bulk imprint on clothing. It's a cheap but functional cutting and ripping tool and sails thru rope and cordage with ease.

Hmm. Would have thought more autos were used. Maybe because they are two expensive comparatively?

i carry a kimber warrior, ruger lcp, combat kerambit, sebenza, 870, police carbine, and used to have a glock 22 in the trunk.

but i cant carry an auto or a fixed blade.

beats me...

NVM on that original post I figured out my mistake. One would think that fixed blades would be recommended.

LE for 20 years, have tried about everything over the years. I have stuck with my spyderco endura for about the last 6 years. It serves me best, blade size, weight, deployment speed and durability. Cant carry fixed blade either.

it is great to get this info from the guys on the street. it's hard to believe our peace officers ca'nt carry anything they desire to aid in their survival. while i was living in ft. worth one officer was shot in chest with a 22 pistol, another took a 45 rd. to the stomach both died. this was before common use of body armor. in arlington tx. an officer chased a felon into a parking lot, guy was hidden & shot the cop when he passed, stepped over the officer whom did have a vest on, officer recovered after being stunned & killed the b-----d.
we ask men to risk their lives & put limitations on equipment they use.

Yeah but you can't carry one of those evil FB knives. LOL

I really think that is stupid.

I'm a uniformed reserve Deputy and we have to follow the standards of the full timers. And that means no knives of any kind on my duty belt.

I carry a Gerber folder in my pocket and a cheap S&W boot knife.

I'm going to look into these folding kerambit knives, they look interesting. I'll have to look for some training if I purchase one.

No fixed blades for our department either. I carried a Benchmade AFCK for years on deep nights patrol and a Tinkerer in my pocket. Now I'm in plainclothes carrying a Benchmade 720 or a Spyderco Endura and a Tinkerer. Easy to guess the SAK gets the most use.

I'm going to get on a soapbox for a second.

Police departments are notorious for not allowing you to have the equipment you need. I can't carry an AR15 on duty even if I purchase it myself. We've had at least three shootings involving AK47s in the city I work in this year alone. I can't even count the number of high powered rifles we've dealt with this year and I can't believe I can't purchase my own rifle and use it. I am stuck with one .40 cal pistol and a remington 870 shotgun. I can't carry a backup gun on my ankle like I used to at my old job. I haven't asked if I can carry a fixed blade concealed because a lot of our guys do and I don't want to be told no. I wear a class "a" uniform everyday at work and deal with bloody people, shit-smeared walls, fights for your life on the ground, and been in one too many bed-bug infested houses. Through all this, I am not permitted to wear BDU's or any sort of ball-cap. I have to wear a busdriver hat that impedes my vision and god help you if you're seen without it. I've requested BDU's for patrol and the answer I get is "this isn't the army" or "we don't want to look to intimidating." Unfortunately a lot of people don't really understand the politics and bullshit we go through. I'm not asking for sympathy, I knew what I signed up to do. I just like people to be informed about the people they rely on every night to watch over them as they sleep, ready to do battle on their behalf.

Off the soapbox

I like the S&W cheap-o knife, but i'm really liking the looks of the HAK. I just wonder if it's large enough/sharp enough for self-defense pursposes. We're not trained in knife-fighting in cop school. Does anyone offer training for the HAK or knife fighting in general? I don't want to go to a karate school or anything. I'd prefer a training class that's more military/le geared instead of civilian based.

check out the new Cold Steel AK-47, you can pick it up for around 60 bucks, its basicly a waveable Recon1. and its 180 dollars, but just because u can scare the hairs off the backs of peoples' necks with it, look at the Cold Steel Large Espada, its one of my 3 edc's that i always have on me :D

I own a ZT 0350cb, and absolutely love it. I would definitely check out the zt 350. I cant say enough good things about the knife honestly. From reading it sounds like your not really a fan of auto/assisted opening knives, but it is hands down a fantastic knife. In my opinion it doesn't get much better until you get a strider. Which zt is a ken onion/strider collaboration. Its an amazing bang for your buck. My knife feels virtually indestructible. The assisted opening is actually way better than i thought it would be. It is literally fun just to open and close. Locks up extremely solid, and if you ever develop any wiggle it has a T8 screw to tighten it back up. Another great thing about zt is that with ever purchase, they make a donation to paralyzed veterans of america. OK, i am starting to sound like a salesman for zt. The zt line was designed with military/law enforcement in mind. So like i said, i would at least give it a shot. You wont regret it.

http://www.knifeart.com/zetostkenonm.html - squeaks in in your price range at $112.

i'd like to bump this thread because somehow it makes me feel good. of all the spydercos one can choose, it had to be a delica (i was actually searching for stand-alone and comparative reviews for the spydey police 3.) comparing a delica with more solidly-built folders for police work, and placing second (third at the least) surprises me.

last, does he really need a partial serration for seat belts? i'm sure my plain-edged delica VG-10 can cut several seat belts just as fast and neater (serrations need some force unlike plains that could push-cut lightly if very sharp.)

I would be interested in getting a left hand version of this knife only for left pocket carry but I'm not entirely sold on the tactics. I carry my knives in a "sap" pocket which is located on my right uniform pants leg underneath my firearm.

Get a SAP on your left leg. I carried my CQC11 so I could grab it left handed and deploy it tip down edge out in my fist. I was always told to carry your 'weapon' knife on the side other than your gun, hence the SAP's location. FWIW I carry a Spyderco LH Military now. Well thought out review and I agree that the Emerson is definitely the best knife of the bunch you've had.
