Cop's opinion on folding knives for police duty under $130.00

I carried a large cold steel voyager, plain edge. Kept sharp it will cut through seat belts just as fast as any serrated blade. I've cut half a dozen seat belts and it was always a one-pass cut. I also cary a cold steel spike attached to my vest with velcro for off-hand draw. I've tried every conceivable way to attach a fixed blade to my duty gear, but the end result is a knife that's just as accessible to the perp as it is to me, so no good.

I've got several autos, but rarely carried them. In addition to being too expensive to risk loosing in the underbrush, I find that the fine motor skills needed to manipulate them makes them unsuitable for law enforcement use, or at least not ideal. Under stress a one-hand opening knife can be opened with two hands, while an auto needs to be opened one-handed.

I tried the KaBar TDI and found it to be absolutely useless. It's an inferior weapon, a useless tool, uncomfortable to wear and poorly concealed.

Frankly, while I like a shiv as a last-ditch backup, a knife is pretty far down the line as far as weapons are concerned. With two handguns, a shotgun and an AR-15, plus a taser, pepper spray, steel baton and two pound flashlight, it's just not something that's likely to be used as a weapon.
