Cord Wrapped Necker

I'm pleased to see more people use the "no snag" type lanyard design.

Right on.

Yup, I saw it here, somewhere, when I first joined, and I was instantly hooked.
I just need to find some cool beads. Up till now, I've been making the loop/bead thingy out of a small black zip-tie.

I wrapped my Necker with a smaller diameter (1/8") braided cord in a simple round-and-round setup. I started off with a couple loops fore and aft through the top holes and two half hitches at the blade end and then just wrapped round and round. As I got to the butt end I was able to tuck the wraps under the fore and aft loops and tie it off in the rear hole. I use a length of PMI Niteline (from REI) for a wrist lanyard, which is very reflective and glows in the dark. I don't like hanging stuff around my neck and use a Tek Lok on the sheath if I am going to carry it outside my pack. I have used paracord through the rivet holes to carry it on my belt too--- worked just fine.

The finger groove idea is great-- I like those simple improvments.

Just a little something to pass a few minutes...

BTW Skunk... I've been staring at that thing for weeks now and I really like the way you wrapped it (skull lanyard ring is a touch of genius IMHO). Never used a Becker before, but it looks very handy:thumbup:

Thanks Tarmix. Skulls are a Love/Hate thing. The gray plastic skulls look best, you have to drill them out a little to get 2 cords thru.

Go ahead and grab a Becker Necker when you get a chance, they are quite handy. Mine was for my Minimalist PSK so I'd have a fixed blade of some sort, but, still within the limits of a very small case.

they're becoming scarce unfortunately....may be a while until camillus can fulfill all the backorders.

Hey Skunk, where do you get the skulls? Love to find some boar heads to attach to my lanyards.:D

Scott, got them at TexasKnifeSupply. they are carrying paracord, beads, and stuff now. Don't get wihte, they look to "plasticky" , the gray ones are a bit more subdued.

Man, BoarHeads would be great! good luck finding them.

No kidding. I haven't ordered anything from them for awhile. Thanks I'll check em out.

You may not want to wrap these!

I had mine wrapped so that it went in the openings and out again, so that when done it looked like a solid handle (only one layer of cord).

After 2 or 3 months I deceided to take it back off just for the sake of taking it off...The coating on the knife looked as thought the paracord had been soaked in acetone the whole time, it was eating away at it  . I had to remove the coating and have since cold blued it, which btw has held up pretty well.

Note:The knife was never really used or exposed to any water etc in that time and I used a quality brand of cord which I have never had a problem with on any other knife.

Thanks for the heads-up, Kdarmy! I never would have even thought about that. In fact, it's the first time I've heard of it. You didn't mention if the steel under the cord was affected, or was it just the black coating?

Upon some reflection, I don't think it's a big issue to me, since I like bluing and patina's and whatnot. But it's a good piece of advice for someone who would prefer to keep thier knife original.

I want to mention, when I re-wrapped my Necker, I soaked the cord thoroughly in hot water first. I wrung most of the water out by hand, and wrapped it when still warm and damp. I find the wrap to be far more solid, tight and stable this way. I'm sure if corrosion is a factor, this wet treatment is likely to make it worse. I cleared off some off the coating on the spine, filing thumb grooves into it, too. I'l keep an eye on it and see if the tang rots off... frankly, I'm not real worried.

Okay, you guys got me inspired, so here are my adaptations to the Becker Necker.

I liked the wrap that SkunkWerX did, but I wanted to try it with smaller diameter stuff. I had some braided 2mm line that is fairly stiff and I htought it would make a good handle wrap. I tried wrapping all the way around and it worked okay, but is just wasn't as sexy as showing off the skeleton holes in the knife handle. I think Skunkwerk's approach feels better too and the holes inprove traction on the grip. I used the same basic approach that SkunkWerX did, but using the smaller line for a lanyard looked a little weenie, so I terminated the wrap in clove hitches at each of the end lashing holes and melted the ends into the rest.

I made a lanyard from Nite Line that is reflective and glows in the dark and mated it to the knife with a simple lark's head knot and then made an overhand knot to finish it off. Not snag free, but simple. The idea of using a toggle with a compass in it was really good. I had a Brunton compass that was made to go on a watch band and I've been looking for a place to put it to good use. It works fine on the lanyard with an overhand knot on each side. With the lark's head knot, the lanyard and compass can be removed form the knife without a wrestling match.

I really liked the idea of cutting some thumb grooves in the top edge and went at it with some small files and finished up with a small hard Arkansas stone. I borrowed a little clear fingernail polish top coat from my daughter to coat the bared steel. There are six grooves in 1/2".

I used a small Tek-Lok mounted with the release tabs upwards and two screws through the rivets on the blade side. The holes just barely line up, but it is possible to get it mounted without any adapting. I did use the thick rubber washers in cloded with the Tek-Lok to even up the mount (note the red arrows in the photo). This mount tends to let the knife handle hit my love handles with the knife on my pants belt, but it is perfect on the compression strap on my day pack and slides back out of the way on the waist belt of my larger pack (GoLite Jam).

I saw a survival setup somewhere on the Web where someone cleverly took a wire saw and ran it through some plastic tubing and then used that as a neck lanyard for a small knife, whistle, firestick, compass and micro LED light. The smaller items were carried on a small length of line that joined the two ends of the wire saw and formed a break-away if the rig got caught in something that might throttle the wearer. I'm of a mind to join the wire saw ends with some dogtag chain and try carrying the knife and essentials that way too.

:D

After posting this, I cut some inner tube rubber bands to put on the sheath. The tube I was using was a skinny one and I wondered if it would make a handle for the Necker. I tried it and it was so-so, and as I was pulling it off, the knife popped out of the sheath and I just got back from the ER (after EIGHT HOURS), with four stiches in my middle finger. Be careful kids!
