Costco Damascus steel knives

Anyone have an update on these? Tuesday Morning has these on their website for under $50 shipped and I have a set on the way.

These knives are now being sold at Tuesday Morning (website and some stores) for $39.99 (!!). Since TM has a return policy, I picked up a set at the local store, took them home and gave them a try. I was surprised... shocked... these are *very good* knives, costing about $13 per knife. They seem to be copies of the Shun Classic knives, at about 1/10 the cost. The box claims VG-10 core, clad with outer layers of SUS410 high carbon stainless. Handle is a mild D-shape (similar to Shun) with Pakka Wood. Build quality was good (not perfect, but pretty good), weight, heft, and overall feel are quite good. All three knives were *very* sharp out of the box.

The box says "Made in China" but the knife itself is not imprinted with the country of origin. Because the blades are supposedly VG-10 (which the Japanese don't seem to export in raw form), I'm wondering if the blades undergo initial fabrication in Japan, and then final assembly in China? Like Shun Classic knives in VG-10, these blades may be more prone to chipping than the somewhat milder steel found in German blades (my 8" Fujimaru Chef's knife has a single tiny chip in it; I've seen similar online observations re. chipping with Shun blades). Of course a little chipping in a $40 set is a lot easier to tolerate than it is in a $300 Shun set. Because the blade is thin, like the Japanese knives, these slice veggies more quickly and easily than my German Wusthof or Henckels.

This is an unbelievable bargain if you can find it. I was so impressed that I went back and bought the two remaining sets from our local TM store as Christmas gifts for family members. At this price (and with a decent store return policy) it's a no-brainer.

I bought the set at Tuesday morning store for $40.00 bucks, they were $79.00 2 weeks ago thought i would weight glad i did, I love them they are sharp as hell, I found this sight trying to find out about fugimaru knifes just cut up a 1" inch carrot like cutting butter.
