Council Tool Velvicut Axe Ongoing Review!

Those have to be the nicest factory handles available today. They really are attractive axes. And I can definitely see were the extra money goes.

Did some maintenance when I got home that day

The edge was still able to cut paper with a stop and go cutting action

The next day I decided to buck another tree.

I Touched up the mirco bevel with the Worksharp GSS w/o the base
Fine diamond and a leather strop with compound

Just the micro bevel

You can see the wavy grind lines, Guess I don't mind sine the performance if good

Good size chips

Gettin' tired and sore lol

Maybe I can get bigger chips with a sharper edge geometry?

Also needed a break and some gloves haha

It's already so this so I just pulled the micro bevel back a tad

Made a nice burr

Weakened the burr with alternating file passes

Removed and cleaned apex with Worksharp GSS

BIG chips!

Done for the day, time to get ready for work haha

Nice pile of chips.

Alright a few more swings :)

Love this axe

The bit is much thinner then the stock Council Tool. Huge difference

Good grain and hang

The handle is the most comfortable in ever used.

Nice details too

Done for the day

Here's the carnage

I'll post more action later.

I am enjoying your review DeadBoxHero. It's good to see someone excited about their new tools and for those tools to be American made. Seeing you actually use the axes is much better than all the "dining room table discussions" that go on.

That spot where you are working looks really nice as well.

Also, your photo here? That looks like something I would expect to see pop up on their website.

Thank you for sharing your experience!

Nice chopping
Thanks brother :)
Love all the pics. You were having fun! Is that cottonwood?
Yea it was a blast, I've been going every other day to some spots

Good eye, yes it was a cottonwood

Best handles I've gotten on an axe. A bit thinner then the gransfors stuff too.

But the gransfors handle are better finished and have a coo ll grip ridges subtlety carved in the handle at the end of the haft.

I noticed that. I like it.

Looks nice and functions great

Thanks Agent, glad to share. It seems there is a drought of information on these axes so it's time to share lots

Thanks for the kind words.

I'll share more soon.

Took some damage from felling some saplings low to the ground

Not something I do often so I'm not as profienct,

I'll share the video later.

Luckily it was small, just a little ding on the edge

From the other side it looked like a chip

With a roll this bad, most of the time the steel just snaps off or refuses to move back in place

I used a DC4 combo stone on SiC abrasive side to burnish it back into place.

Impressive, still needs sharpening to completely remove the damage but it's good to go for now.

Tough stuff.

Went back to finish off that log

I'll post a video later

Love the polished bevel here, used a Worksharp 6k belt

Cave O chips

You can see the forging better here

This is a very handsome funtional tool :D

Now that's putting it to the test! Love all the pics. Keep up the good work man.

Thanks man :)

Here's a small tree felling video.

I'm not the most skilled at it but I'll share anyway!

I'll do some bigger stuff in another video.

There are some Aspen trees that need some felling on a friend's property

Had a great day today,

Loaded my entire axe collection in my backpack and went to the wood pit

Haha that backpack was Heavy

Velvicuts were the top performers, thin bits, great steel, and the most comfortable haft's to hold and swing

Nothing beats the raw power of a 6lbs Dayton flathead axe

Love it

I'll have to go into detail later about the how they all stacked up to the Velvicuts

Who needs a 1911 when you have a backpack filled with axes?!😂😂😂

5160 is great stuff on these axes

Harvested the dead from the forest

Here is a good working area I found in the forest

I'm always thinking about how to protect my edge

Harvested wood for a big split wood fire in a rock undercut

I was able to harvest enough wood for a 6 hour fire. Could have burned more but I got sleepy

All with just this felling axe
No saw.

Very powerful tool

I hit a rock with my edge when splitting wood in the rocky area by camp at night.

The 5160 took it like a champ

In the past my 4140 axes took huge deforming rolls

The 5160 held its shape much better

Time to sharpen my baby

No need to take out a fitness club membership if you use an axe to tangle with wood that big on a daily basis.

Haha indeed

More axe action

I'm really loving the 19" Hudson bay.

It can do some serious work.

Thanks so much DBH! Your reviews are my favorites to watch! Great pics and videos. I'm just now discovering how great axes are. I am looking to get a HB design axe but want atleast a 24" handle.

Thanks brother I really appreciate it

That Council tool HB Velvicut on a 23in haft would be killer!
