Council Tool Velvicut Axe Ongoing Review!

Finally putting the Velvicut Felling axe to use for what it's supposed to be used for.

Felling.

Really see why a felling axe is a felling axe, it's an endurance machine long slow lazy swinging with focus on accurate strikes and shaping the proper felling notch.

The long 36" handle allows it to be swung close to the ground and to maximize the endurance swinging.

But is honestly rather clusmy if used in other roles compared to the blistering speed of smaller handles and lighter heads for wilderness camping.

But if I had to fall trees for forestry in the wilderness for long hours in the field I would definitely prefer this axe.

It's a Cadillac for sure.

Ya gotta love that Velvicut Handle too.

She's a slow swing but there is definitely something very meditative to the rhythmic slow swings feels like you could just keep swinging forever.

Like being in a trace

Very satisfying in its own way, even though I prefer more of a Sprint then a marathon.

I enjoyed your video. I am thinking of buying the Velvicut Hudson Bay hatchet but undecided.
Have a look as the just released new Council Hudson Bay. It have several advantages over the old Velvicut style HB.

Better still, check out the re-released Forest Service Edition boys axe. These have both the steel and geometry to stand head to head with top line vintage American axes. I have uncounted axes hung and ready to use. But when I needed to do some light bucking last weekend I reached for this axe right away. 1080 steel and good geometry right from the factory. Only needed a light honing to remove a factory burr.

Isn't the Velvicut line supposed to be superior quality to the ordinary Council axes?

Yes, the Velvicut line is made of 5160 steel while their standard line is 1060. But the new Hudson Bay's have better geometry and a deeper eye which will help the hang to last longer.

The Forest Service Edition axe is made of 1080 which in my opinion is even better than 5160. The new HB, the FS edition and the Velvicuts are all superior than most of your Euro-imports. Council is doing great things!

Has the price of the Gransfors Bruks axes gone up during the era of Covid19 due to shortages? I am new to the world of high end axes but have been pricing them and the GBs seem very expensive on Amazon compared to the competition.

I liked the velvicut hudson bay hatchet so I ordered a velvicut hudson bay 24 inch camp axe. Both are nice.
