Counterfeits at today's fun-show

Didn't read all the posts, however, I want neither a fake knife, nor a fake maker. If you know what I'm saying.

In regards to prices, that knife will only warrant that much money if it can be used brutally for the majority of my life, with a lifetime guarantee, without me feeling uneasy or hesitant about it.

I wanted to post my thoughts on the Strider. I was curious how people would react because i assume I am saying some terrible terrible things. ...Maybe other people's responses/reasoning for buying a Strider would seem legit and make me feel comfortable paying for one??

I'm not going to pay $200 for a fake with a blade made out of ?????aluminum or who knows. Nevermind. I didn't know they would be such a high price.

My $200 price point ($150 really) is because that seems to be about the average price for really really good knives. I'm not a fan of junky flimsy knives. My buck disappoints me that it "dulls" after exclusively cutting tomatoes for two weeks.

Basically I have two reasons for not purchasing a Strider:
1. I already find it hard for me to get my friends to understand my justification for paying for a Benchmade (which has great styling, ridiculously smooth opening, good steel, good waranty, good blade centering, good lock up. So how do I explain to myself and someone else why I bought a strider, which is prone to lock bar wear issues, among other things.

2. I bought an Emersons and an Adamas for hard use and I really dont want to use it hard since I paid so much for it. If I wanted to be uber practical, I would just buy a Buck 110 and a sharpener, but I am willing to pay a little bit more for something nice looking I don't want to feel/be stupid by paying too much more for premium.

To summarize; I try to keep my purchases somewhat practical and there shouldn't be a $200 knife that has better build quality and longevity than a Strider. That's what makes me dismiss them so quickly right now.

If someone offered to trade me straight up my Adamas or an Emerson for their Strider, I would only be doing it for resale valu, S30V vs 154, and because all the internet people would think I'm cooler. I wouldn't be getting anything more oout of the Strider.

(I do still have the Strider SNG and Sebenza bookmarked in case I get caught up in the lore and my addiction gets really bad, though.)
Ok.....
So you buy knives to please other people?
Who cares what other people think! Buy what you want.

And you said: "I bought an Emerson and an Adamas for hard use."
If you bought them as such, why are you scared to use them?

Good point. Most of the folks I know wouldn't know the difference between a CRK and a CRKT anyway. I didn't buy my Sebenzas (or any of my other knives for that matter) to impress anyone but myself. No regrets! :)

Counterfeits are bad, not primarily because they (arguably) steal sales from makers and retailers (since internet forums that foster buying, selling and trading used knives may do that too) but because they can defraud consumers who get duped and can undermine perceived brand quality and so damage valuable reputations.

That said, out of curiosity, I have knowingly bought 4 counterfeits on the secondary market. Frankly, I would never pay the price for a real Sebenza, Strider or Hinderer, since even used, those prices are far beyond my comfort range. But I wanted to see what they felt like in hand (approximately). The fake Hinderer seems quite good, but I have no idea how it would stand up to hard use. The big fake Strider seems OK but is NOT in any way a smooth-opening knife. Nor is the small fake Strider, which won't really sharpen well but is also OK. But the fake Sebenza -- though it opened well and was very sharp -- had a deformed tang that gave a secure opening less than half the time. Very unsafe. That knife has been thrown in the trash bin.

Moral of the story: a 75% success rate when buying knives is not acceptable. If you gamble on a counterfeit, you may get something that's kind of OK, but there's a good chance that you've thrown money away.

I agree with PURPLEDC. I am totally surprised that anyone with any brains at all would knowingly buy counterfeit ANYTHING. In addition to being illegal to even import counterfeit merchandise, you have no idea of what you are getting. Also how can anyone brag about their "Rolex" for example while knowing it is a cheap fake and that they are baldfaced lying about what they have?

Some counterfeits are downright dangerous such as aircraft grade fasteners or counterfeit brake linings and have actually killed people due to substandard performance or outright failure. Want to get into a true emergency situation where you need top performance with your counterfeit knife? NO WAY JOSE!

If I buy a counterfeit item inadvertently and find out about it I feel ripped off. If I bought one intentionally I would consider myself to be STUPID and a sucker as well as a lawbreaker.

I've purchased 5 counterfeits to compare to the real deals. I feel neither foolish, stupid, or like a sucker for purchasing them. 3 of the 5 surprised me to the point that two have become work knives and one has become an occasional after work carry knife. There's nothing wrong with other two either, I've just never done anything with them.

Judge for yourself.

Okay. I'll judge. Hmmmm. Guilty as charged of bad taste and intellectual property theft, with a side of aiding and abetting international terrorism. Any other questions?

I meant judge the knives for yourself. Try to keep up.

Your judgement of me has me literally slapping my knee and figuratively rolling through the aisles. You, Gronk, are hilarious. International terrorism, comedy gold.

If this wasn't GKD, I would tell you where you can stuff your opinion and judgement, really hard, with your own fist.

Just for the sake of getting some facts out there, an EU-funded study says that trade in counterfeits -- NOT including fake pharmaceuticals, airplane parts or other things that might actually harm the public -- not only doesn't hurt legitimate businesses anywhere near what they claim but that they can be a benefit to consumers. And no, they don't fund terrorism. And the buying of counterfeit goods is only a crime in France and Italy -- not in the US. (The UK has been considering criminalizing it, but I'm not sure they have followed through.) I can only cite to an article about the study -- http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/...969335/Fake-goods-are-fine-says-EU-study.html -- because the actual study was published in The British Journal of Criminology and is behind a paywall.

I'm not sure what to say other than buying fake knives is pointless. One of my friends does and it was quite hilarious to see him "field test" the blade along with my REAL Cold Steel folder. It was even more hilarious when the tip of his blade broke two minutes into the "field test." Good guy, just doesn't have a good taste in blades :P Stick to the real thing if you want quality.

Shouldn't had oughta asked me to judge if'n you wasn't ready for the judgement ya got. Wanna hear some more judgements, like about fists and shoving and such? Sounds like some personal issues going on there. Good luck with that.

What??

English. Do you speak it?

I'll simplify.... Shove your opinion in your brown eye with your tightly balled fist. While you're up there, feel free to pull your head out. It's obvious you aren't getting enough oxygen to your brain up there. Get it now? I apologize for not being able to speak your native tongue of moron.

Congrats on making the ignore list.... The only person on my ignore list. You're a winner!

Children, please.

I own a "replica" and a few "knock-offs" and whilst they're probably decent enough knives, my new interest is budget Spyderco/Byrds. Really when there are such good knives in the sub $35 range, Byrd, Ontario RAT, some Cold Steel, etc, there's really no reason to buy any knock offs.

If you want really cheap knives something like Sanrenmu or Enlan do good quality budget knives for very little money. I think they should look at expanding their range into the midrange market though.

Wow, what an extraordinary thread! Open promotion of fakes, personal attacks, a veritable cornucopia of broken forum rules. Or have the rules been changed?

This "child" is 66 and knows the difference between right and wrong, real and fake, stolen intellectual property and honest homage.

GronK and Tony8179

Gentlemen.....you're getting a bit out of hand and both guilty of slinging insults. I can ding you both or you can relax and participate in the discussion with civility or walk away from it. Use the ignore feature if you must. :)

Thanks

Jason

It's a strange phenomenon around here. Folks buy really tough knives and flip their wig when they get a little scratch on them. Wierdos I tell ya.

True story.

I have a Scorpion Chinese made fantasy design knife (Master Cutlery) with a real scorpion embedded in the scales. Given to me as a gift by my grandson. So it is just a cheap corner gas station knife, but I keep it because it means a lot to me. I had it out, along with about a dozen or more quality knives - Benchmades, Spyderco, Buck and even my William Henry - doing some upkeep. One of my neighbors dropped in and saw my knives laid out. His eyes lit up and guess which knife he was most impressed with? Yep, the scorpion knife. With all the nice knives there, he is impressed by the $10 gas station knife. Sigh.

So, yeah, most folks wouldn't know a Strider from a Taylor. I can't remember anyone ever commenting on a knife because they understood what I was carrying.

Exactly. I can't brag about my knives. People don't see it for the most part. If anything people think that your not so bright for spending money for a quality knife.
