decided to go with the 950-1 over the 950, i liked the all black g10 better than the multicolored.

also, i didnt go for the serrations, im really not all that into serrated blades, and i also heard that benchmade's serrations weren't top notch?? also have no experience sharpening them...

also, im a sharpening noob (i used the smith's sharpener with the tungsten(sp?) vee shape in it on my leathermans) but i wanted something nice to sharpen my new benchmade with... any recommendations?

for my next knife i was thinking a 710 or a griptilian...

anyways heres a couple pics of my new 950-1... check it out

Nice knife! I too, am a fan of the Rift - and anything with the Axis lock. I carry my rift EDC - the same one as yours 950-1. I also have the one with the black and gray scales too. I have found the blade shape to be one of the most useful I have had. Congrats on your purchase! That knife in your pics is by far my favorite carry knife.

I sharpen mine by hand mostly using the diamond stones from my Lansky. The Lansky is nice but I cant tell you how many times I have cut myself using it. My grandfather taught me how to sharpen freehand with stones and stropping on an old leather belt. The sharpmaker is a good tool to use and you can get a real nice edge on your knives without having to spend $200 on a sharpener.

I guess it depends on what I have handy. I use shooter's choice FP-10 lubricant elite in the action. If I will be using it for food, I use Olive oil. I lube mine every time I sharpen it which is about once a week (not because I really need to, but it is something to do when I am on Conference calls...) I also clean it out with a dry Q-tip at the same time, just to get the lint and gunk out of it.

The gun oil kinda smells a little, I will also use Arkansas perfect honing oil to lube it. I also keep a light coat on the blade as well. Put some on and wipe it off. Cleans it up real nice too if there is sticky stuff from tape or whatever on it.

But the logo isn't centered perfectly! Haha just kidding with you. Nice knife.

As for sharpening, buy a spyderco sharpmaker and don't look back. You will love it.

In what ways does the 950 differ from the Grip? I'm curious because I have the Grip, and have been wanting the Rift for some time now. Thanks!

Now this is a thread that I can get behind ;)

Good looking knife man, glad you enjoy it. I'd vote 710.

Fyi DO NOT use that smiths carbide scraper on your BM it will destroy the edge completely. A lot of people use the spyderco sharpmaker (I'd get the diamond and ultra fine stones with it) or the dmt aligner.

wow 3 for 3 on the spyderco... any tips on how to use the sharpmaker?? or just follow directions

Use the 40 degree setting, and keep the blade completely vertical and that's it.

Think of it in aircraft terms. You want to have zero yaw and roll, but a little pitch won't matter.

i love the rift also, i have two already. you can find them for good prices here and there on ebay. its definitely one of the better benchmades currently available. i have a black handle one, and the dark blue, its hard to decide which looks better.

Funny, I've got one of them on my Lansky right now. I really like the high hollow grind on mine but I think edge bevel is just too obtuse. It seem to get way too dull too easy. We'll see how it performs with a something closer to 40 degrees inclusive.

about how many times each side?? and what's a good general sharpness test? paper?

Watch some YouTube videos and most of the questions will be answered, also the video that comes with it will tell you all you need to know.

Normally 20 strokes per side alternating is enough. That means 40 strokes total. You move from coarse to fine, and corner to flat. That will make sense once you see the kit.

A good sharpness test is cutting phone book paper. If you can slice the thin paper it's very sharp, if you can push cut the paper then it's extremely sharp. Once you buy the UF rods you can try to slice TP and whittle hairs.
